After ordering my BIAB USB drive on the 30th of December and receiving it on the 5th January, (that's pretty flash for the distances and the New Years fuss, I decided to find out whether my most wanted change was up to scratch.
I built a song in BIAB this morning selecting a seven stem RealDrum part...exported the lot to Reaper, replaced the guitars n bass, kept the organ and then did a VERY simple mix of the drums, (panning & levels)...no processing other than sending the snare bottom to the reverb bus and a little compression over both.

The 1st half of this track example has the stereo mix BIAB provided of the drums and the second part (a repeat) has my mix. For me it's a no brainer...I can deal with clicky kick and the almost ubiquitous LOUD hihat now.

DRUM STEREO FILE THEN DRUM STEMS

I decided to tidy the stem version a little so retracked the bass and did some adjustments to the guitars n organ. The drums remain as they were with a little level adjustment to everything else.
Tidier stem version

This is the same song..tweaked a bit becasue I was bored and I've swapped the drum kit this is Nashville Pop swing and it has OH's which makes things easier to mix for me.

Stock mix: louder
Custom mix: punchier

You can even see this in the SoundCloud waveform.

Yep, I didn't try to match them for level...I thought about it but wanted it to be relatively tweak free.

Very cool, Ray. That was the first thing I wanted to try, too. So good and only getting better. The other thing I wanted to try was the multichord. I was writing a song with one of the new styles and it was at 135bpm. Needless to say 8 chords in a beat was rather like a blue. Thanks for doing this. It came out great.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Interesting comparison Ray! Both sound pretty good to me! I appreciate you going the extra mile to explore what this program can do and share it for the benefit of the forum community! Thanks, Torrey

This is will be a cool add. I have been blending midi and the real wav drum stems for about a year. I had to use Studio One Impact to get a close drum kit patch. Definitely can shape the drum sound especially in the kick, snare and ride patches.

Thanks for the comparison, ray.

Like you, I am looking forward to being able to tame the hi-hats and cymbals.
Mixing drums stems is never as easy as folks think it will be (I think you might have said that a time or two).

Interesting results.

Ray,
Cool bed! Coming together nicely. To my taste, the best one is Tidier stem version. I touched on stems very lightly as they are still ironing out some bugs, but they are surely a welcomed feature.

P.S. there are a lot of good steps taken with this release of BIAB.

Well as a Mac user it will be a while before I can diddle around with that ... assuming I go down the rabbit hole at all.

Interesting comparisons Ray. The last track ... OH = over head mics?

Yes, the W -> Mac lag is significant.
O.H. - yes overheads.

Lots more energy and punch in the drums.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
