...pretty self explanatory....

BIG DREAMS

do you remember all those big dreams
i talked of all the time
almost every day a new scheme
i know i drove you clean out of your mind
i was gonna be such a big deal
i was gonna conquer the world
wishin' on a star i'd make it real
and give it all to you girl

   promises i'd whisper
   tender soft and low
but in the end it was just you and me girl
   where'd those big dreams go

tried to make it work in hollywood
nashville and new york, too
making ends meet the best we could
trying to see those big dreams through
but nothing ever seemed to catch hold
nothing really went my way
up against a wall weary and cold
til i finally had to call it a day

   promises i'd whisper
   tender soft and low
but in the end it was just you and me girl
   where'd those big dreams go

now look at us after all these years
all the hard times, heartaches and tears
we beat the odds we made it through
me and you

   promises we whisper
you to me, me to you
in the end it's all we need, girl
   big dreams can come true...

Nice one.

That's a common story that resonates well with the vast majority of folks.... which in the case of a song.... works well.

Loved how the bridge turned it around and refocused on the couple...and that what really matters is the important things....and that's the big dream in the end.

The changes for the chorus are classic, and very effective,in lifting the song and expectations.
I had this cranked as the intro was so gentle and the vocals came in as quite a shock...I then turned things down and started again...works perfectly at "reasonable" volume/levels.
The string squeak at 3.09 either adds authenticity or is annoying - depending on the listener.
It bothered me - but only for a moment.

Yet another sincere, relatable narrative - you do them really well and there's no sign of staleness or overwrought compensating - set to a succinct backing and communicated with THAT voice.

REALLY, really cool.

Cheers

Easy listening - relaxed beat, mellow singing, laid back arrangement. Subtle harmonies. Good mix. The banjo was a nice addition.

And of course, well sung.

One of those writes that signals the "twist" far in advance, but it's still so sweet when it finally lands. laugh

Floyd,

You're still at the head of the class teaching the rest of us how it's done!

Love that finger picked guitar in this, it really has a warm sound that is the backbone of the track! Vocals are setting so sweetly in the mix (bg vox also)!

It's another exceptionally good song that should have mass appeal!

You always impress me every time I listen! Thanks, Torrey

Good song. The happy ending was nice. Good story the lyrics tell - that's hard to do. The band was spot on. Good work.

It's always a high point in my day when I click on the forum and you've posted a new tune. I think most people can relate to this song. Most people don't see their dreams realized. To that extent, I thought perhaps your 'happy ending' was unrealistic. But people want a happy ending - no, they need that happy ending. So you made the right call.

Beautiful production that invites multiple listens, as usual.

Loved it.

Man, where have I been lately? Four days have passed since you posted this, and one of the reasons I come here is to check out a new Floyd Jane song. (You know I love all the old ones too --my travelling companions.) Yes, I remember those big dreams, and you singing about them makes them more real. "In the end it was just you and me, girl." Looking back, that (for me) was the biggest dream come true. Keep living the dream, Floyd!!

Enjoy whatever happens!

“promises we whisper
you to me, me to you
in the end it's all we need, girl

J&B:
Yes they can!

Janice:
When Bud first saw this post a few days ago he came to me in the dining room and said, “You’re going to love floyd’s new song.” So, I stopped what I was doing and read the lyric and got all teary eyed. Then I listened three times in a row and was happily singing along with my favorite lead singer. smile
This is a beautiful lyric and melody and your phrasing is just amazing. Soul to the max.

Bud:
While we are speaking of max I’ll throw in the fine band and mix. And steels and banjos with a synth pad … who would’ve thunk?

J&B:
Another very, very hi bar production mr jane!

FJ,
Another well produced tune. You are so good with your structure! Nothing crazy, but everything is very well thought out. Nice romantic lyrics. Phrasing was mentioned, and I will echo these positive remarks. Excellent vocals! Banjo was a good fit. Mix is clear. Easy listen. Thank you for sharing.

Misha.

ray - thanks for the fine review! Much appreciated, of course. Sorry about the initial loud vocals smile For me, there is an appropriate level for an acoustic guitar. That generally is a lower volume than many folk mix to. That can cause that initial vocal burst. I hadn't noticed the squeak. It IS definitely noticeable (once pointed out).

David - thanks! Indeed, one of those I-saw-that-coming-from-a-mile-away lyrics. Spend any time writing in Nashville and you get that gotta-have-a-happy-ending ingrained in ya in a hurry (and after a while you might get a bit lazy about it). Waddya gonna do? smile smile wink

Hi Floyd,

A constant flow of very strong songs from your hand. And in a way classic, because all are so recognizable yours.
Therefore lovely songs!
This one is no exception and especially wonderful in the chorusses / harmonies!
And I haven't mentioned the strong lyrics yet.

On the other hand, after I wrote this to you I had that strange feeling I have written it before...

Have a nice day, Floyd!

Thanks, TM. It was not intended to convey a "happy ending" as much as a realization that they (the couple in the song) had always had "that dream come true" in their lasting relationship/love...

Beautiful reflective write!!!! Lyrics really hit home!! Love the way you changed the music between verse and chorus, and the pedal steel drifting off makes such a nice contrast with the syncopated rhythm of the guitar/drums!! Love the banjo!! You are a master, my friend!!!! Take care. Greg

Man, what a great song. Kinda tells my story, I've always had that dreams of making it, but now at almost 70, I need to face reality. But enough about me, I love this song!!

Thanks for the great comments!!

Hi floyd,

This is a magnificent write, performance and presentation. It's one of your best.

I love the premise that big dreams are dependent on how you define them. You've used this idea to create a very powerful lyric.

As I listened, hints of Bobby Goldboro kept drifting in and out of my mind. I'm not quite sure why. I'm going to have to go back and re-listen a few times to try and work it out.

This is truly top-shelf listening.

All the best,
Noel

Hi Floyd,

A lovely, sweet song.
And as for the lyrics, we think everybody recognises what they tell (if old enough smile )

Good lyrics. You know how to say what needs to be said without excessive verbage--the way it should be.

I like that hip folk guitar. Nice feel.

Therefore lovely songs!
This one is no exception and especially wonderful in the chorusses / harmonies!
And I haven't mentioned the strong lyrics yet.

On the other hand, after I wrote this to you I had that strange feeling I have written it before...

Have a nice day, Floyd!
Hans

Thanks, Hans....

Floyd,

Another terrific write . . . with you usual stellar production touches—nice hook as well. Love the lyrical turn in the last chorus—well constructed and delivered idea. Good stuff!

All my best to you,

Deej

So well put together!
As always, vocals shine and the band is as tight as it gets.

Nice one!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
