I posted this yesterday on the recording forum, some one suggested I post it here:
New Mac user here. Tried to use computer mic to put some vocal on a song. Seemed to be working - VU showing input level. After a verse I stopped song to see what it sounded like. Tried to listen and program crashed after I chose one of the options. Reloaded and no more input VU level from mic. Couldn’t find a way to turn it on. Thought I might have corrupted program in crash so Re-installed. Still no joy. Any ideas? TIA for any help

You don't say what MacOS. This is important. Since High Sierra, apps must ask to access the Microphone and if you missed the request, it won't be available. It used to be that this was automatic but no more per Apple.
Fortunately, this is easy to correct. System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Microphone. Unlock the padlock with your Admin Code and check on BIAB which should be there. Close the panel. You might have to reboot so just do so.
Now you need to make sure that the Mic is your preferred input device in System Preferences/Sound and also is what BIAB is expecting to use.

Hi jeverist, which Mac OS are you running and what version of Band-in-a-Box do you have? There might be additional steps to try depending on what you are using.

jeverist. if you anticipate doing lots of vocals i would suggest you consider getting (if you dont have already) a pro xlr mic and also a usb audio interface. there are lots of good budget solutions. heres a list of interfaces that pg users have found work well. https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=635707#Post635707i would also suggest you rent for a month before buying. my recording products store lets me do that to ensure all is copacetic with my recording rig. in addition i'm a bit of a audient fan boy. heres a nice package starting out. https://evo.audio/products/evo-start-recording-bundle/overview/this gives you all need to start recording... (maudio, presonus focusrite and others also have packages at the budget level....) best om

Mike Halloran, thanks for this info! That was it. Working now Chantelle, thanks for the extra help there. And, justanoldmuso, thank you for the mic advice. I doubt that I'll be trying to do any pro quality recording, just demos for band mates, but if the sound is that awful, I'll check that stuff out. I like the USB interface thingy, last time I did computer recording of any quality it was sound cards, etc.....

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
