So I’ve just installed BiaB on a new computer with the RealTracks and RealDrums on an external drive. In the preference panes for each I have this set as the location:

/Volumes/External SSD/Applications/Band-in-a-Box/RealTracks/
/Volumes/External SSD/Applications/Band-in-a-Box/Drums/

But all of the Real styles say [RT n/a]. Looking at the mixer window if I load a Real style, most of the tracks will have something like "N/A 1158: Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Reggae Slow Sw075” (for instance).

The drums seem to load OK, but on playback I get this error:

/Volumes/External SSD/Applications/Band-in-a-
Box/Drums/CongasShuffle{singlej/CongasShuffie[single)_110_St
ye.txt, file has error: MP4/AIFF File doesn't exist in same folder
as txt file or in another folder

Here are the contents of /Volumes/External SSD/Applications/Band-in-a-Box/Drums/CongasShuffle[single]/ :

CongasShuffle[single]_110_Style.bt1
CongasShuffle[single]_110_Style.m4a
CongasShuffle[single]_110_Style.txt
CongasShuffle[single]_140_Style.bt1
CongasShuffle[single]_140_Style.m4a
CongasShuffle[single]_140_Style.txt

Any idea what’s going on, and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Edit: Version 2021 (515) on a Mac Mini M1, MacOS 12.2.1 (21D62)

Is External SSD the actual name of the drive? If not, change it to the actual name.

If so, did you go into BIAB and manually re-select the path for Drums and Real Tracks?

If you did both, I'm not seeing why it wouldn't work unless you do not have permissions to access that drive — and there are a few reasons why that might be.

BTW I just remembered, there are a couple bugs in selecting Real Tracks on a different external if the original external is no longer connected and/or the path has changed——I've been trying to get it fixed every time there's a new version. The first is the message to change a Preference in a place that does not exist but that just flashes and can be ignored. It's the second bug: Here's the workaround:

When you go into the Window dropdown and click on RealTracks Settings, the error shows that the old location is not available has an OK button. As you've probably discovered, clicking on it does nothing. With 2018* and older, it would lock up my Mac and I'd have to do a Force-Quit. With BIAB 2019 and newer, click again and again and again. Eventually it will open revealing the window you need where you can select a new location. Once you find the path, click Update, then OK and you're done.

Drums has never given me this problem—it may be slow but it does respond.

I'll revisit this again when BIAB 2022 for Mac becomes a reality. Of course, once I've set it properly, then finding it becomes no longer an issue so I ignore it again.

*The older workaround was to reinstall from the drive that came with BIAB, leave it connected showing that as the location of Real Tracks and Drums. You could then go in and change the location to your new external.

There are some files in the RealTracks installers that need to be installed to the same drive as your Band-in-a-Box program. So if you want to do a split install, we recommend installing everything to one drive, then transferring your RealTracks and drums to the other drive. Otherwise, you could install and run your Band-in-a-Box program to the external drive and this should run smoothly.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
