Just wanted to know if you have any preference to use BinaB direct from the hard drive (no install) or install the program on your computer, therefore using the hard drive as a back up.

Although it looks like a big difference on paper, there's almost no difference between running BIAB from the PG Music supplied HDD (mechanical hard drive).

Certain write to disk functions are slower on the HDD such as saving files and converting audio but that's about it.

That said, I prefer to run BIAB from an installation on my iMac (except for Real Tracks and Drums—see below). This way, everything is backed up hourly in Time Machine. Also, I don't like the noise that the HDD makes, minimal as it is.

Since the Audiophile version of Real Tracks is 1.47TB and Drums is 78.87GB, I've copied those folders onto a 4TB SSD over Thunderbolt where I also keep my VI libraries. Again, it's for the convenience and lower noise in my studio—raw performance is not an issue.

Thanks for your comments Mike. I'm not a pro at either musicainship or computer setups so I've always ordered the disk in the event anything happens I have a backup. I also have a seperate backup and yes I know a little overkill. However, last year was the first time a new program was sent to me digitally. I have an older Mac running Sierra, and it takes forever to load up the files. I ordered the hard drive from PG music. But while waiting delivery I decided to run an older copy direct and I didn't seem to make allot of difference, so I was just curious.

This is interesting to me. I have a 2020 iMac and, as a 2021 Showcase Award designee, I have taken a raincheck on a hard drive with BIAB 2022.

Right now I run BIAB with the application on my internal SSD and the heavy stuff on an external SSD, but if I can actually run it from the BIAB HD without a substantial performance hit, hey, that would be great.

PS – The title of this thread looks like a trucker song.

I run from an external SSD attached to my Mac with no problems. Out of curiosity one day I ran BiaB from a USB stick and an SD card. These ran a little slower but were certainly usable.

Any of our options work great, but if you decide you want to run a custom installation that suits your needs, be sure to set your RealTracks and RealDrums folders up under RealTracks Preferences and RealDrums Preferences so that they are looking in the right directories.

Cheers,
Ember

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
