I rarely step outside of the gospel music genre and if I do it's usually a song about family...this is one of those songs I wrote for "Cousinfest" which is a bi-annual family reunion we hold in Kentucky near our ancestral homeplace...it's country (of coarse) and pretty simple...it's some thoughts I have about my many (127) first cousins...it's a sentimental journey for me...maybe for you too (stranger things have happened!) I love this song... so well written and arranged... Vocals are great, but way too wet for me... Back off on the reverb a lot, and I believe the song will sound much better.

There's something about a good song that just pulls the listener in - and this is one of those songs. Nice use of "I remember..." without making it sound like a list song. Too much reverb? I'm the wrong person to give an opinion on that, I just remixed an older song an mixed in a ton of reverb. The mandolin is especially sweet. One nit - at 1:55 where "passes" jumps out in the left channel. It's easy to notice because everything else (harmonies, vocals, instruments) sits perfectly. Really nice, pleasant song!

David...thanks for the comments...reverb is a trick for me to get right sometimes...I've become obsessed with bluegrass instruments (mandolin, fiddle, resonator and banjo) and love to use them in all genres of music...I'll check out that the "nit" and fix it later...thanks again...I always value your thoughts.

An enjoyable listen.
The lyrics are encapsulated with a special nostalgia.

Love it, brother. Cousinfest!? 127!! You sound comfortable in any genre, Dan, and you have one of those gifted voices that can fit anywhere. What a wonderful song.

Cousinfest ... what a cool way of keeping the family ties alive.
127 first cousins? Wow. Hope you have a large venue!
Quite an audience if you performed the tune!
Well done and a nice sentiment indeed.

This song doesn't sound simple at all! It sounds like a country masterpiece and those are hard to accomplish.
Super vocal; I like the amount of reverb you are using.
Great instrumentation and mix.
One of the best real country songs that I have heard in quite awhile.
Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up. Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Nice to get out of the genre box and spread your wings. I like this, a lot.
Regarding two comments....
reverb: Yes.... I agree... back off the verb and maybe only put it on the master buss and very lightly. leave the main vox almost dry
the PASSES thing around 1:55. I don't think it jumps out but it is noticeable. It sounds more like that particular take is out of sync and for that reason, and because it has "S" sounds in it, it is very noticeable.
Mandolin..... cut it off there at the end. remove those last dribbling notes. The song is done at 3:33 on that last chord hold.
All that aside... this is great!!!!
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Hey Guitarhacker...thanks for your comments...I appreciate your suggestions and have remastered the song...I reduced the reverb...cut the tail of the mandolin at the end...did some remixing of the BGV's and increased the volume of the lead vox...hope I made what you called great greater ...thanks

Dan This may be "outside" of the gospel genre, but I have no doubt God is smiling down on this fine work you have put together! As always, I love the vocal work...it's beautiful! So glad you're a part of the forum and I always enjoy everything you post!
Thanks, Torrey

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
