I'm pleased he's a superb trumpeter & composer rather than comedian...that prepared, read joke/pun fell flat. Music is a metaphor IS a metaphor. Does that make it a metametaphor?

I just studied and listened to the delivery again. The key point in this lecture series was to articulate the position and importance of the rhythm section in swing music, and how different instruments provided dissimilar input to collectively contribute to a swing style.
To quote Wikipedia: "A common definition of metaphor can be described as a comparison that shows how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in another important way."
And that's exactly what Mr Marsalis proceeded to describe.
When I listened carefully to the dialog again, and carefully studied the intent of the lecture, I found that the use of the term 'metaphor' in the subject title was absolutely perfect.
I don't understand why any comment should have mentioned 'metaphor' and a 'joke/pun fell flat'. However, I would gratefully receive a detailed explanation and analysis for my better understanding.

When Wynton first went back to the roots of Jazz, I was rather disappointed. "He's throwing away all the evolution and fusion that's come since". I've now come to believe that he's strengthening and consolidating the roots and foundations, not throwing anything away.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful. Kawai MP6, Korg M50, Ui24R, Saffire Pro 40. AVL:MXE Linux; Windows 11; Win8.1: Scarletts BIAB2022 UltraPAK, Reaper, a bunch of stuff.
As a youngster, I hated Wynton’s music with a passion. Then, on a jazz summer camp, I was in a band led by John Ruocco, a great teacher, tenor saxophone player, clarinetist whom I worship for his modernity, his lyricism and avant gardism.
When some students and I started criticizing Wynton Marsalis, he lectured us -albeit in a fatherly manner.
He said: “I have never heard Wynton play one single note that wasn’t sincere”.
That shut me up, big time.
Musical preferences aside (I do like Branford’s music a lot more than I do Wynton’s), I’ve come to respect this great man’s work.
@Gordon, what you write in your comment is so deep and true. Helps remind me of the need to be open minded: towards the past as well as towards the future.

Good evening AudioTrack,
You don't "understand" why I mentioned something? For shame, mine, clearly. Ought I read the Concise Requirements of Responding in AudioTrack's Threads sticky?
Wikipedia isn't always one's friend. It can be a confusing place as it also states, "A metaphor is a figure of speech that, for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. It may provide clarity or identify hidden similarities between two different ideas."1. Not to forget Wiki also suggests, "The word metaphor itself is a metaphor..."2.
The basic idea, as taught to 10-12 year old students in NSW, is similar to the following: On the football field he is a tiger. Metaphor On the football field he is like a tiger. Simile She shone from the stage. Metaphor - implied. She shone from the stage like a star. Simile. One suggests a comparison while the other
I didn't criticize his use of the word metaphor; I pointed to the fact that it could be READ AS a metaphor. I found it an amusing moment in his little dialogue which I attempted to amplify with a pun. Obviously that failed. I found it more amusing than the pun/joke/metaphor of "...un-legislated division of power..." which, it appears, fell flat.
Ought I read the Concise Requirements of Responding in AudioTrack's Threads sticky?
Sigh... I'm gone. Feel free to continue to 'entertain' others by exploiting multiple meanings of a description if you think that is useful. It was never the intention of my participation. My participation was about the relevance of the musical content.

Much as I feel Rayc’s first reaction had no intention to harshly criticize anyone. Maybe I misread.
we’re here for the love of the music, as are most forum members. Soft spoken and otherwise.
Let’s join to promote harmony.

Download and install this to your RealBand 2024 for updated print options, streamlined loading and saving of .SGU & MGU (BB) files, and to add a number of program adjustments that address user-reported bugs and concerns.
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows® Today!
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
