Is there a way I can revert to a previous build without reinstalling? I have found that a clean installation will fix the problem I have since updating to Build 4. There should be a way to back rev this software similar to how you can uninstall just the latest Windows updates if they case a problem.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

You can install a previous installer over the installation created by a newer installer.

Hi Eddie,

There will be a backup of the build 2 exe in: RealBand\Data\Backup\Builds. You can copy this back to the main RealBand folder and run it (you don't need to rename it to RealBand64.exe, you can have multiple .exe's in the folder and run one or the other).

However, since there might be other files affecting this, what I would suggest you do is rename your existing RealBand folder (e.g. RealBand_Prev). Then, run the bandinabox_realband_2022*.exe installer you have there (assuming you downloaded this), and only check the RealBand component. Now you will have a fresh RealBand folder, and it will be build 2.

If you want to experiment with installing build 4, duplicate your fresh RealBand folder to RealBand_build_4, and install the build 4 patch into that folder. Then you can use either the build 2 or build 4 folder.

Can you confirm that the RealTracks generation problem is happening only with one or the other?

There is one other file to pay attention to, which is bbw2_64.exe in your bb folder. This file should be dated Feb 15. RealBand uses this file. Check that it's not set to run as administrator. If RealBand64.exe is not set to run as admin, but bbw2.exe IS, that will cause issues. I don't think that's what the problem is though, since nothing would be really working in that case, not even drums.

You might try opening the Task manager and see if there's something unusual you notice there. Sort alphabetically, and then by memory, etc.

1. I run everything as administrator every time I run any program.

2. All that renaming and then re-renaming gives me a headache. What do I do if rolling back works and then all my folders have new names? EDIT: I totally read what you said wrong. I launched Build 2 and got the same result. Straight to Generating Real Drums and not instruments generated.

How about you launch Team Viewer and YOU look at my directories? You know what you are looking for and it eliminates hours of emailing back and forth. I have now wiped every trace of BIAB from this computer TWICE and reinstalled. That's 3 2.5 hour installations I have gone through already.

Let me ask you this. IF you were sitting at this computer, what would you do differently? Did I click "setup.exe" wrong or something? Is there more than one way to do that? (Again, as administrator.)

This is getting to be as annoying as when wife 3.0, upon my telling her that the battery in her van was dead, went out to try and start it. I asked her "Do you think I turned the key wrong or something? Do you think that dead battery somehow charged itself in the 3 minutes between when I tried it and when you tried it?"

Is it not possible that this particular cookie cutter copy of 2022 had a bad file? Task manager? Really? The executable is Real Band. The problem is inside that executable. What could possibly be in the task manager that would cause this? Previous songs I load in play fine. The only issue is song generation. 2 other users running Build 4 have been able to generate the song files from my very seq file. I can generate it on another computer running Build 2 (which will now NEVER be updated). And troubleshooting the problem this way is borderline ridiculous. We both have Team Viewer. I know because a few years back you remoted into my computer to look at why dual interfaces crashed the program. And you fixed it with a patch 3 weeks later! A brilliant and impressive piece of coding. You being who you are could look at my directory and see what you need to know without me fumbling around guessing if this is what you are asking for. Man, 25 years as a help desk monkey made me understand the value of remote desktop.

Okay. More data for you. I brought back the Build 2 and ran that, opened the seq file, hit generate, and it again went right to drums and did nothing more. So the confetti I tossed last night when Build 2 worked on the other computer was premature. 2 does not work on this one.

I have no idea what you just said. Install a previous installer? There's only one installer. I mean, you click setup.exe and watch it install. For 3 hours. Then run a build update, and the build update to Build 4 apparently broke my program, because Build 2 runs as it should (though that is on another computer, so not necessarily apple and apples).

I have now installed 2022 3 times, which cost me like 8 hours of my life and ended up in exactly the same place. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is the definition of what, again?

I went through the hard drive and removed EVERY reference to PG Music. I even went to the registry and deleted the (one) key in there and installed it clean. And got the exact result.

Yet Harv, on Build 4, was able to generate the tracks. MoultiPass did it too. Ember, however, on a PG computer, saw it fail. She is trying hard to get this fixed but we are now doing the same things over and over and that's not going to fix it.

This is quite frankly just nuts that different people get different results from the same software. I remember when 3.0 asked me "Will this software (I think it was Photoshop) run on my computer?" And through my disbelief that she would even ask that question I said "Do you think there's a Photoshop for Jane's Computer and then one for everybody else?" Q&A sessions like that are why she is an ex.

Andrew mentioned checking " bbw2_64.exe in your bb folder. This file should be dated Feb 15."
If this BiaB file is mismatched, it can cause strange issues like this.

If you go to your C:\bb folder and look at that file, is the modified date correct?

Mine is dated 1-21-22. Oddly, I did nothing to the software on 1-21-22. I didn't install it until yesterday.

EDIT: Also odd is that while it shows a modified date of Jan 21, 2022, it also shows a created date of March 8, 2022. How can it be modified 6 weeks before it was created?

This is why I retired from IT...

Okay THAT is resolved by applying a BIAB update I missed. I don't use BIAB so I didn't update it. NOW the test. Did THAT little oversight fix the main problem? Off we go to test it.

And.....

I don't frickin' believe it! My lack of understanding about how BIAB and RB are intertwined was the problem all along. I have never once booted up BIAB until today. I just don't like it. I want a DAW like interface. I applied the update to BIAB to bring it to 920, and that file in question is now dated 2-15-22 and now Real Band works.

Un-flippin'-believable.

Yes, RB and BiaB are VERY intertwined, probably why you can't buy one without the other anymore.
.. and a few of us tried to get you to check this very file yesterday!

I was thinking about asking for a Teams meeting just to make sure you had done this, but when I got off work it was already solved

/yeah, I know; to you it's "what's this work that you speak of", but I'm still in the trenches

Oh, I checked it Harv. I just didn't know what to do about it when I saw the wrong date. I have never used BIAB so I didn't know that I had V918 and that there was an update to V920. Typically when I see updates I just do the RB updates. I now know better.

You still working and me being retired only means that I am old and you are not.

Interesting finds on the updates. I only use BIAB but I update both BIAB and RB.

Maybe Andrew needs to post the BIAB updates at the top of this forum like he does on the BIAB forum.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
