Thaxted

Composition by Gustav Holst – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thaxted_(tune)

MIDI piano arrangement courtesy of The Hymnary.

Guitar by BIAB, RealTrack ~~365:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking Ev 085.

I am posting this 71 seconds long bare bones setting because the tune is so lovely and the RealTrack is so wonderful I cannot stifle myself. I do hope to come back to this someday and expand it into a slightly longer short piece, along the lines of what I did with Carrickfergus.

(later...) Please see
https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=711124
for the conclusion of this project!

Pretty version.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Thanks, and I'll be sure not to try and recycle this thread if and when I do come up with a longer version, thanks to your advice last time around.

(The Carrickfergus thread is really a mess now, the main post has a link I can't edit and the real link is buried in chitchat way down. I edited things on SoundCloud so the demo link now points to a copy of the final version, which is better than a dead link but exceptionally suboptimal.)

a funny thing... we used to have this great Bass player in our old band, His name was Ted THAXton...
This morning, I listened this, "Carrickfergus" and "All That There Is" in that order... and was soothed and relaxed by the lovely music I was hearing...
I really enjoyed all three together.
Great work Mark.

Holy moly, you're my DJ! I am truly not worthy! Thank you so much.

Sneak preview of things to come... Here's the tune upside-down and backwards:

The lyrics were in the Hymnary MIDI, and startled was I when I heard Kevin singing them!

Beautiful arrangement. Yeah, too short you should put out that longer version.

'tis a lovely thing but 'tis also a pity Gus' work was turned into a worship & praise piece in the great tradition of theft sanctioned for religious purposes.

Mark,
You certainly know your way around a score.
I have no idea how you create these pieces in BIAB, I'm a total novice.

You pump out some stuff I'd never otherwise thing of listening to but, I do.

These particular lyrics are exceptionally feeble, so I think I'll steer clear of them. If I do use a bot singer I'll seek out some alternatives, no problem with Jeezian if it's clever.

Not to take any more credit than is due: I rely heavily on (1) downloadable MIDI files and (2) BIAB's ability to generate chord sheets from them. Try it, you will either be totally amazed or completely disappointed, depending! And thanks again.

Wow, Mark. I love the intricacies of Carrickfergus. Brilliant. I cannot stifle myself. Thaxted is a really fine piece, and I can't wait to hear the Mark Hayes treatment on it. [Once again, I am thoroughly amazed at ray's musical knowledge.]

Enjoy whatever happens!

Mercy, that's too blasphemous for me to get away with! I've been thinking I'll retreat into an instrumental. But extra credit for

Muchus thankus for these kind words. I am very proud of Carrickfergus.

This music here comes originally from Holst's big symphonic work The Planets, which also contains the awesome movement Mars, The Bringer of War. I tried messing with Mars in BIAB, but BIAB's MIDI import didn't like the 5/4. =8^(

Thanks again. Gratitudinous Maximus.

Hi Mark,

You surprise me all the time with your songs! Sometimes strange, sometimes so classic. wonderful. You are a very creative man!

I listened to little Thaxted and big Carrickfergus and liked them both.
But the last one more. Very well composed. Only ad 1:05 I would have done something else with the piano...
And I think Thaxted has a lovely melody. So that will be a promising project. I only would like the recorder be replaced by a flute (and some reverb). But surprise me!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
