Hi, everyone:

I wasn’t quite sure I was going to post this . . . but what the hay. It’s actually a song I wrote maybe 30 years or so ago, after my maternal grandmother passed away. With my father moving on last month, I decided to dust it off and give it the BIAB treatment. My dad was an accomplished accordion player, so wanted to work that in a bit. Anyway, sorry it's another sad one on a Friday night but I hope you enjoy the listen! And I'll try to get back to something a bit more upbeat down the road. smile

My best to you all,

Deej

Here’s the song:

ALL MEASURE OF CONTROL

[EDIT NOTE: Per Vic's comment below, I've changed the title of the song, so note it no longer matches the current thread title]

Here are the lyrics:

We laughed if off back then
Until reality came kicking in the door
Man, how time takes its toll
But, hey, how the world forgets
Until the matter of the truth unfolds
It’s all beyond our measure of control

Still we take such precious steps
To avoid the very end—I guess it’s true
Still we dare to be so bold
But, man, how we all forget
It ain’t nothing we can ever hold
It’s all beyond our measure of control

Ain’t very clear to me
How the world can feel so empty of life
When the angels take their own
Ain’t very hard to see
I’ll be in misery tonight
In a darkness all my own
Beyond all measure of control

And how we live on now
Pick up the pieces and go on somehow
It’s hard—hey, it’s a burden on us all
But, hey man, how time forgets
Lets the waters of its river roll
Far beyond our measure of control

And here’s the band:

RealTracks 3119: Bass, Acoustic, PopHalfNotesSync
RealTracks 3541: Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm ClassicRockSlowFingerStrum
RealTracks 3321: Guitar, Acoustic, Soloist RnBPopDblBrent
RealTracks 2921: Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm FolkSlowSw16Mike
RealTracks i757: Accordion, Rhythm Pop8ths
RealTracks 3278: Vocal Mmms, Rhythm RockNRollGospel
RealDrums:: PopSyncSw16^02-a:ClosedHat, Snare, b:Ride, Snare

Fantastic intro

Outstanding vocal but those lyrics took it over the top for me
Fantastic writing

The backing band is perfect, as is the mix

Loved it

That's cool Deej,
A lovely write...for the 1st 5 seconds I thought it was going to be Major Tom though.
The accordion fits well.
The only thing that sticks out to me is that the clicky kick drowns out the snare...if you could reduce the click and boost the thud with some EQ I think it'll sond even better than the coolness currently.

Cheers

Good write - I enjoyed it.

It's good to have a song sad, even on a Friday evening.

The BiaB setting fits, and your voice is perfect for this.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Great lyric, Deej.
One of your best I think.
I would change the title to "All measure of control" because that part came in strong.

Hi Deej,

See? Never say you quit sad songs for a while. Before you know you have to make excuses...
And, as I told you, you have thé voice for sad songs so keep on making them!
However, this one is 30 years old you wrote. And all the while your sad songs convey the same beautiful feeling.
So, your next song will be a? Sad song maybe?

I enjoyed it,
Hans

Mario, RnAM, rayc, David, musician 17, Vic, Hans and Mark:

Thanks for the listen and kind words--makes me glad I shared that folks seems to have enjoyed it. Much appreciated.

rayc: If I were to revisit the tune--and not sure I will on this one--I will definitely play a bit with the EQ on drums with your comment in mind. Drums continue to be my Achilles heel.

Vic: I think you are right, and I've made that change. I initially was going to go with "Beyond All Measure of Control" but thought that a bit too long--so went with just "Beyond All Measure". But "All Measure of Control" better captures the lyric. Thanks for the suggestion!

Stay well all--

Deej

Deej,

I really liked this one, and loved that guitar and piano balance in the intro. Your vocals, lyrics and melody really drew me in. Also I am usually not much of an accordion fan, but I sure liked it here - especially knowing the significance it has to the writer. Great job.

Man, you can call this song Rose and it would sound as sweet. Beautifully done with a strong edge of passion Deej. I love how you worked in the accordion. I'm a BIG fan of your vocals, and this song is the perfect vehicle for it. Very well written.

Enjoy whatever happens!

You nailed this Deej! Talk about prosody! Love the hook and how you use it. The rhyme scheme is very refreshing in that it isn't so predictable but works. Vocals fit the song perfectly. I'll be looking for more from you to be sure.

Excellent song/production/performance...
To me, your vocal styling seems a little pretentious, but that's probably just me, and my weird sense of taste... You are a very, talented singer/songwriter.

Definitely worth dusting off, sad and heartfelt lyrics sang with right amount of emotion. Good simple intro, enjoyed the chord progression and the light instrumentation works very well, the accordion fits and mmms give it a nice hymn mood.

"How the world can feel so empty of life when the angels take their own”

“And how we live on now, pick up the pieces and go on somehow”

We can certainly relate to the above lines, as I’m sure many others can also.

This is a beautiful lyric, performance, BiaB band and production. The nod to your Father with the accordion was very nice indeed!

Powerful!
