I have a second phone and seldom get a call from anyone. My main number rings off the hook with someone trying to sell me something. Text messages to buy stuff.

300 plus emails a day from companies I have asked to take my name off their list without results. Some are major corps that I have done business with.

I don't need a Facebook account or Twitter or perhaps even Soundcloud any longer and for sure I don't need a pro account.

I assume there is no easy to do this but what should I be aware of?

Billy

I have my landline forwarded to my cell. That way I have Verizon screening spam calls, and then the app on my cell adds a second layer of screening.

As for emails, I filter each spam email filter and they don't build up.

But you said 'change' rather than 'delete', correct?

Hi Matt,

I guess several things are going on at once. I have been giving some thought to how to eliminate as much email as possible. The same thing goes for the phone for both voice and SMS. Texting is something I do but it is a true pain in the butt.

Lately, I have actually had to turn my phone off to get some sleep. I use to have something called an answering service. Perhaps I can pay someone else to deal with all the issues and only contact me when it is important.

Do those sorts of people exist any longer?

I have this wonderful satphone. It cost me about $1 to make an outgoing call but incoming callers get charged about $20 dollars a minute. I tell everyone that before I give them my number. I very rarely get bothered by that phone...lol I got the phone as an insurance policy for when I am far offshore and to use in a hurricane.

There is more to this than the phone and internet. I want to keep things I actually use and get rid of all the rest. I am looking over here at a bookcase that has 5000 or so CDs that none have been turned on in the last three years. I don't need or want that stuff but have little idea how to get rid of it.

Being out on the boat a lot lately, I have begun to realize how useless TV is for example. Yes, I occasionally feel the need to catch up on what's going on around the world but this minute-by-minute blow-by-blow account of all the crap that has happened is truly useless.

I can say for sure...I got too damn much stuff and I don't own it, it owns me!!

Billy

We used decluttr.com, and yes it omits the e before the r at the end. You use an app on your phone and scan the bar codes of the cd's it makes a list, and gives you a price they will pay. We sold a bunch of cds and dvds to them recently before our move. Well worth the effort as some of them were worth as much or more than we paid for them! Many were worthless. We donate those. Salvation Army or Goodwill will take them off your hands. You can donate books, dvds and cds to Miami-Dade Library also.

Web host e-mail spam defense app lets me block e-mail addresses. If the company is not one I normally do business with, I block them rather than ask to be removed. Why verify that they have a 'live' e-mail, so they can sell it to others?

If I know the company, I'll do the 'remove' routine.

I monitor all phone calls. I have an old-fashioned answering machine. I don't answer unless I either recognize the name, or when they start talking, if I know who they are. Most spam callers don't leave a message.

If a person calls and during the message I realize I want to respond, I do. I apologize and tell them I'm monitoring my calls. They understand.

The exception is local robocalls. I figure a small business is trying to survive. I'll pick up on them, inform them that robocalls are illegal, and if I hear from them again, I'll report them to the FCC. If they call again, I follow through.

As far as TV is concerned, I unhooked the cable in 1990, never put up an antenna (In Ft.Pierce if you don't have an antenna you don't have TV), and never got a digital converter. Life is better for us without TV.

The TV is the salesperson in your living room. Not only for products, but for your political opinion and everything else. Remember, if it's free, you are not the customer, you are the product.

Good luck Billy

Unless I am expecting a call that might be coming from an unfamiliar number, I DO NOT answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. If it is important and they really do want to get ahold of me they can leave a message. If they don't, then it wasn't important.

That is the number one way to avoid spam calls; answering lets them know that the phone number is live and encourages further calls. "Do not call" lists are worthless.

Texts get deleted unread. Emails get deleted unread.

FWIW, I have calling party ID on my phone and an answering message that goes "Welcome to Gordon and Sue's cold call filter; if you think we may talk to you, please keep talking and we may answer the phone. If we don't, we may just not be around, so please leave a message.". Most callers hang up.

I started that just days after I had 18 cold calls in the space on 1/2 hour, whilst trying to work.

FWIW we also have caller ID. We have our landline set up so it rings 2 times then goes to our answering machine. If someone wants to talk to us they will keep on talking until we pickup or they will leave a short message and we will return their call. We get around 20-30 telemarketer calls per day. It's a real PITA!

TBH honest, my landline number became useless years ago ..
The VM box is full, and I don't answer it because the phone is set to silent (on purpose), and it doesn't charge for more than about five minutes anyway so I never use it.

If you call on that number you are wasting your time.
It is there for FAX send only, which is so rarely used I should just cancel it .. FAX receive is set to off.

Actually I just checked; we no longer have a FAX machine so cancelling it just moved up higher on the priority list.
I feel sorry for the next guy that inherits that number!

What's a land line?

A telephone number that is physically hard wired along the earth's surface.
It never goes to a satellite and back, hence 'land' line.

Two cans with a string in between ..

I have both a landline and a cell.

That doubles the odds of having a phone connection after a hurricane.

I rather like the landline, with an old-fashioned answering machine on it. I can monitor my calls very easily that way. I don't have to put anything down or pick anything up, just listen.

Same here.

Our cell phone is used only when we travel. It is off most all of the time.

Note I don't text message. If anyone wants to contact me they must call.

I know, I'm old!

I know that; I was being facetious.

I haven't wasted money on a land line in years.

Never? Not always. The phone company may route your call in whatever way is most efficient for them, including bouncing off a satellite for a regional call.

Not when I got *my landline .. there were no 'satellites'
Heck we only had to dial 5 numbers back then, and the rotary dial gave your finger the free ride back

smile
I haven't used it much since then

I am not sure there is an answer to all this phone crap. There are people who need to speak with me about things that go on in the business. Yes, I am retired but I don't think I will ever get away totally.

There are electronic controllers that we have at the farm that no one but me knows how to fix. I don't know what they are going to do when I die...lol

I also have too much "stuff". High-quality computer systems I don't really need. High-quality guitars I don't need. Custom tube amps I built I don't need. I may not be done playing music but I am done playing on stage in public. Perhaps after fishing season, I will change my mind...lol

Never thought about it that way. The 'ride back' was actually when the decadic dial sent the correct number of pulses to the Uniselector in the exchange to step through to the next connection point. Thinking back, I guess it was probably ahead of its time, back then. There's certainly no Uniselectors or Cross-bar hardware in telephone exchanges nowadays...

.. and all I was I was hoping for was a giggle ..

Some comedian (maybe Steve Martin) already claimed this joke long ago
When you dial the phone do you give your finger the free ride back?

OK I am aging myself now

No giggle but you did get a concise description of how our old telephone system worked.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
