So I had one of my Pandora stations playing this morning and a song comes on I haven't heard in years.

I have my opinion, but if you agree that this song is masterfully good, what makes it so good?

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Lowdown by Boz Scaggs is a nice track but I don't consider it masterfully good. It represents much of the musical work done in the mid to late seventies. For me, Lido Shuffle is a better song from the same album. The whole album is a good example of high quality song arrangement and mixing.

The mid to late seventies was at the cusp for when analog hardware like mixing consoles and keyboards would start to be replaced with digital consoles and synths. So what you're hearing is the best of analog production.

The main thing about Lowdown is the song arrangement and mix support the star, Boz Scaggs. None of the tracks intrude upon or overlap with each other. Each track occupies its discrete space in the frequency and panning spectrum.

Small steps like having the analog high hats loud on the left channel and the electronic high hats quiet on the right channel create interest without anything clashing. None of the background tracks, including the background vocals, clash with Boz Scagg's vocal track.

Hi Jim,
I wasn’t only referring to how this was mastered when I said “masterful”, Although the mastering is obviously superb, I had how it was arranged and it’s musicality more in mind than its mastering. This song starts off simple but steadily builds toward the outro.

First, I consider the drums. Crisp, especially the hi hat as you point out. The fills are also well done and superbly in time and not over done. No need for overpowering crash cymbals.

Next I consider the bass playing masterful. Up to about 0:09 either a guitar in a lower register or a bass in a higher register is carrying the intro. This then becomes a counter-point throughout the rest of the song. Then the true bass kicks in with a simple and driving 1, 2-3, 1, 2-3 pattern giving lots of room for the snare to breathe. At the same time we have a jazzy e-piano coming in playing tasty chords and around 0:19 we have some nice incoming flute to provide a melody. The lead vocals are good but it’s the instruments for me that are noteworthy.

Then at 0:51 we have beautiful background vocals enter the scene. They sound to me like 2 female and 1 male with the females dominating (a Motown feel?). We also have faint strings making an appearance. Then at 1:58 we have our first guitar solo and at 2:07 we have more pronounced and sustained strings sitting up top which sustain until about 2:15.

Then at 2:22 the mood changes driven by a more active bass line with an absolutely superb guitar solo. And around 4:08 the outro begins with more excellent guitar soloing. The whole band is full on with more energy coming from the drummer who is tastefully riding his ride cymbals. The thing I most liked about this outro from the first time I heard this song is how the guitarist is moving back and forth between individual “clean” notes and “dirty” chords. This “dirt” in my opinion is masterful and supports the idea of him being lowdown while driving the melody.

I’m not a trained musician, so I’m sure this can be technically described much better by others. But the whole thing is very danceable and arranged with each instrument speaking its voice clearly and in turn within a rock-jazz/jazz-rock, non-pop framework. I also hear a tiny bit of Steely Dan here (or vice-versa). This is why I think its masterful.

According to Ultimate Guitar, Boz (or the writers) chose 9 and 13 chords. This would be fun to learn on the bass if I can find the time.

I wonder how Rick Beato would describe this song?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
