I don't know if you have this in the US and in Canada, but, here in the UK, we have a food spread called Marmite. The idea is that people either love or hate Marmite. Nothing in between. So with this song. You may either say that it's a cliche', both harmonically and lyrically - same old chord progressions, same subject with the lyrics ... or you may perhaps, who knows, like it for what it is ... a somewhat sappy (haha) love song. Or, perhaps, my Marmite analogy is completely off, and you may just say: "meh ...", haha. Up to you, completely, of course - all feedback welcome :-) No-One But You

We have Vegemite & Marmite though the latter is far, far less popular.
Like butter on bread it's the 'mites are a great success story of early introduction and continued use through family culture and salt addiction.
Something has to be done with excess milk and the waste of the beer making process...

it's familiar in that it comes with the "James Changes" but there's nothing hackneyed about the music or the lyric.
You write from your heart and that is clear.
Your turn of phrase has that Englishness that is somewhat more formal and pleasant to the ear than Australian English.
Had I not... is a perfect example of this.
Terrific vocal recording though I would LOVE you to work on this and slowly add sung lines.

A good write. And a good vocal - nicely recorded, smooth, even...
The mix is good.
A few times the quick chord changes seemed to be "fighting" the melody a bit.
Good job overall.

Spoken word music is definitely your strength. A slight touch of reverb on your voice, in my opinion, would make even more dynamic. And you know how I enjoy unusual and lovely chord arrangements! And perhaps just a touch more higher EQ. Nonetheless, this is a lovely piece - terrific lyric, sweet arrangement and has that special Delsano magic all over it. Very, very nice, my friend! You always do these spoken songs so well! I think your mix is good. I also think Alan is correct about a slight touch of reverb on the vocals would bring them out a bit more! You are a really good lyricist! And no matter whether you speak or sing the parts it always seems to work really well!

Ray: haha, re: Vegemite and Marmite. I've never tasted the former, and rarely the latter, I must say. I don't know what I'm missing, I guess ... Thanks so much for your kind words, I'm glad to hear the song works for you, and especially that it doesn't sound hackneyed or cliche'. I fully intend to change topic, in my upcoming songs, but this one just wrote itself - again ... anyway, genuine thanks for listening and for such a kind comment!!!

A good write and you are definitely finding your sweet spot in mixing your vocals into the mix—the blend is stellar here. The one downside for me are the (in my opinion) too frequent chord changes, which are a bit too fast and furious for a song of this genre. While they are impressive in their own right, I think it may distract from the mood of the tune (at least it does for me a bit). Just one listener’s opinion, so take it with a big grain of salt, and see what others think.

Hi James,
See? These kind of songs are sooo your thing. Some months ago you wrote you want to make some happier songs. Not the sad ones. I wrote you must not do that; this is your style/ groove. And with this song you proofed it is like that!
A very nice -sad- song, but like some wrote here, you need to make a few adjustments. Some reverb on the vocals and less chord changements in between.
Oh, and although we in the Netherlands hate marmite and enjoy our peanutbutter, I loved it. The taste is so awful that you had to like it... (that's not always the case for me), but, like you, I stopped using it because of the salt.

James, you always have the best chord changes, and this one is an outstanding music lesson. I agree with Hans that this is your style. Sad songs that actually sound like they are sung by a man who is secretly happy about the sadness. Wow, that sentence doesn't make sense. You are singing about melancholy yet there are happy memories coloring your woe. Sing on, James.

I know your feeling set out in the lyric about writing about things you haven’t experienced. The only way you can do that is research and analogy to try to make it seem like you know all about it. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Here you seem to be writing about a personal experience and that comes over so it works. The only thing you could add is a melody.
