I had issues with my I9 machine and formatted all the drives. 680 gigs of music software reinstalled. The computer is running correctly now.

Had I not reinstalled all this I would not have had a good idea of the amount. The 680 gigs does not include BIAB which is own it's USB drive.

I assume this is not a lot for some of you.

I have BIAB on its external drive, Reaper which is miniscule, a folder of REAL Mellotron .wav files and a bunch of plugins. My software would be less than a gig if not for BIAB.
I do have all the songs recorded in the last decade or so & all of the tracks in those projects stored "just in case" but very little software and no sample libraries apart from those mentioned.

Cheers

Everything is on my Mac Internal drive. All sound libraries, fx, DAW, BIAB and lots of video and image editing apps and associated files. The drive is a terabyte and about 70% full.

I have one external drive for Mac Time Machine auto backups when any files are added are changed. And a second external drive for bootable full backups. Both external drives are swapped monthly for counterparts I keep in a safety deposit box.

My Mac has files dating back to my Windows days in the 90’s. 30+ years of contiguous data. All very simple actually.

The one tb drive I am using for music is about 70% full also. That does not include any video software, although video is not much of what I do.

The extensive programs are Toontracks programs like Superior Drummer, which is pretty large. Native Instruments also take up a lot of space.

Data/finished music is written to another internal drive and duplicated to USB drives and on the internet.

All of these software methods of generating music produce results that are significantly different from what would otherwise happen with other live musicians. I do miss the sort of live involvement that used to go on when I lived in LA.

Having large amounts of software, I assume, is pretty standard in today's world. Much of it can be acquired for free, and storage is not so expensive.

Wow... I hesitate to even look at mine. All I know is it's a lot. My DAW computer is exclusively for music so 99% of everything on it is directly related to that purpose.

I do housekeeping periodically which entails moving the new projects once completed, to a storage drive thereby opening up storage space on the C drive.

Maybe one day I'll take the time to figure it out. But, that day is not today. And tomorrow isn't looking good either.

VST instruments can be enormous. Hundreds of GB.

I have one such library, and a bunch of other smaller ones.

Problem is, it would be a long challenge to find the total space of each. They bury data files all over, especially in remote places like /User/my name/remote or local low - who can figure out why? The data often isn’t in the folder under /Program Files where the application is.

BIAB Audiophile takes about 1.7 GB. EDIT that’s wrong; I meant 1.7 TB. While BIAB has a lot of folders, it used to be worse until about 2018 when they reorganized them. And at least nearly everything is under /BB , wherever you choose to put that, so it’s relatively easy to find and determine size of files used.

Amen. I had to make a file to keep track of where various VST/VSTi expansions and presets should go. I understand the economics but I am not nuts about the proliferation of developer player plugins, especially ones that make it difficult to relocate your libraries and require a web logon/sign-on when started or to keep functioning, not to mention their associated downloaders that do not give you the option to keep the zip/rar files. Still, it's all pretty miraculous in the end.

The biggest orchestral offender so far (even worse than the ~600GB Spitfire full BBC Symphony Orchestra): I recently purchased EastWest Holly Orchestra Opus Edition at a nice crossgrade+sale discount (70%) and then realized how expensive that discount was. Up to twenty-hour download/installation sessions for some of the eight included modules. The EW Downloaded/Installer works well, you can run it and walk away, but there is no option to preserve the downloaded RAR files which were deleted sequentially during installation, so separate WinRAR operations were required to archive the downloads. It didn't happen to me during installation but I subsequently discovered that the file paths can get so long in some of the libraries that, if they are not installed in a succintly-named folder (e.g., "EW" or "EastWest") in the root directory, copy/move/installation errors can occur. Not something you want to have happen during an hours-and-hours long (875GB) installation. Though, to paraphrase Larry David, "it sounds pretty pretty good." And, again, it's all miraculous and hard to believe that so much sampling and developmental work can be purchased for $300.

I guess I strayed from the OP. I'm not going to tell you the size if my library storage. You'll hate me.

EDIT: I will add that the most bloated Full Kontakt libraries are from MUZE (but their Mello library is worth it).

I sure most people will recognise that's a typo, but just in case, that's 1.7 TB.

Thank you Gordon. Yes, I meant 1.7 TB. I edited the post, although it’s already been quoted. I was sure I typed TB but, oh well.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
