Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Robert Earl Keen, Lucinda Williams, if any of these names ring a bell then perhaps you will like this post. "Anderson Fair is one of the oldest folk and acoustic music venues in continuous operation in the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anderson_Fair_Retail_RestaurantThere were three places in Houston, Texas that I hung out and played at after the war. Sand Mountain, Carnaby's, and Anderson Fair. I got to Anderson Fair a little before Lyle Lovett and some of the other famous people. You did not have to be a stellar player to play there at that time. That is where I met Eric Taylor. He had some influence on me and many people. I knew Nanci Griffith who Eric married.  This is how I will always remember Nanci  Lyle Lovett ( he always stood up straight...lol)  I discovered these videos and movies. I believe most cities have one or more iconic music venues. For Charleston, South Carolina it use to be the Folly Beach Pier and Pavilion.
First opened in 1939 big bands like Glenn Miller and the Dorsey Brothers were featured. George Gershwin composed the opera Porgy and Bess while vacationing at Folly Beach. The first pier and pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1957.
The rebuilt pier and pavilion opened in 1960 and featured popular artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, The Coasters and Fats Domino. Local popular music groups vied for the opportunity to play the venue by participating in "Battle of the Bands" competitions.
The second pier and pavilion was destroyed by fire in 1977. New pier construction was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

Hi Jim,
Anderson Fair was and still is one of the most unique venues I have ever been in. It has never made a dime. It is run by volunteers. The people who work there take money out of their own pocket and support the place. It exists only to support singer/songwriters. Decisions are made on what is best for the artist, not for how much money the artist generates for the place. In general, the only cover songs that get played are those that belong to artists who play there. The general public may not know anything about Anderson Fair but it is as well known to singer/songwriters as Austin City Limits is.
The room is pretty small. The equipment is pretty basic. People come here to listen to the artist. I have seen Eric and others stop in the middle of a song and tell people to either stop talking or leave. Also, the management will refund you your money and escort you out the door if you don't comply.
As with many places, it has evolved over the years. In the early years, almost anyone could play there. As things progressed, it became such an important place to play that you had to be pretty good to get a night on that stage.

This place opened around 1970. That is 50 years of continuous operation.
There have been some places built and supported by very wealthy people, Carnegie Hall for example. Anderson Fair was started with a few hundred dollars by working people who were anything but wealthy. It has survived because a hand full of working-class people made that happen and continues to do so until today.
"Club operations depend on a volunteer staff paid only in tips, and the majority of proceeds from ticket sales go straight to the performers."
I have actually never been in any place like it. The phrase "starving Artist" has some real meaning at Anderson Fair. This place has always provided something to eat to all musicians who were hungry.
This is a place where it is common to be able to talk and hang out with Grammy award-winning musicians.
It would be interesting to hear if any of you know of anything like it, here in the United States or in any other country.
