Hello,
I never used the DXI before.
I just recently re-installed BIAB in my new Windows 7, and used the DXI trial.
When I used BIAB today, I had a notice that my trial period had expired.
Now during any BIAB song I enter,( I tried several) every third beat of every third bar( or so) is muted.
Is this a conincedance, or is the DXI purposely distorting my program.???
Thanks
Walt

I don't have Windows 7 but the latest patch has the Coyote WaveTable DXi synth to be used by Windows 7 folks. If you did not install it, you should do so and see if it helps.

The folks at PG can answer the trial issue.

I don't understand why I need it.???
It seems to me, that the program should run properly with or without DXI.???
I do intend to buy it, but that point is, why.???

The Coyote WaveTable DXi doesn't cost you anything. The Coyote Forte DXi does. The WaveTable DXi sounds much better than nothing.

When the Forte's trial period runs out, the sound drops out. This is normal, and is fixed by purchasing a registration key for $40.

What you don't understand Harpster is Biab does not have any sounds of it's own. None. It's a midi/audio program that requires a sound source. That sound source is a synthesizer or the Real Tracks or both that you have to buy separately. I know that's confusing because I think most of the Biab packages includes some Real Tracks and those sound great but for the midi side Windows has your onboard sound chip synth for sound but it's not that great for music. People will spend anywhere from the $40 for the Forte DXi to software samplers like Sampletank for about $300 on up to $400 for the Ketron SD2 all the way to $3,000 for a monster big name keyboard to use for sound. There are many more than this small list for sound but they all cost money. The Coyote Wavetable comes with Biab and allows access to your Windows sound chip as a DXi and at least gives you something to start with. This in turn allows you to do stuff like audio rendering which is what you have to do if you want to convert your Biab masterpiece into a CD. If you can't render, then you have to record it in real time, not a deal breaker it just takes as much time as your song is long. Rendering only takes 15 seconds or so. Once you get the Wavetable DXi going and finally hear some songs, you almost certainly will be back asking why does Biab sound so crappy? Reread my first sentence and spend the $40 for the Forte DXi, much better sounds for little money. Even that is not pro quality but usually good enough for people to play with while they figure out what they really want for sound.
It sounds like you're not very familiar with all this, that's ok this is the friendliest forum out there to get you started.

Hi Walt

You have had some excellent advice above and as a basis you do need a DXi like Coyote Forte for around $40 or at least the supplied free CoyoteWT to make things work

However I have also mentioned in a previous thread the if you have Windows 7 then most likely it will have a RealTek soundcard - now without setting this up any sounds will be weak or tinny

With a little bit of experimentation you can make the sounds as good as any basic soundcard - it has the Roland Sound Canvas sound set

Extract -

"Being a different computer - soundcard and operating system which processes audio differently and faster, but first of all it is best to get the best quality of sound possible by doing the following -

Go to - Control Panel > Sound > on the Playback tab > double click on your default/chosen Playback device - (probably Speakers) > go through each sub-tab and experiment/adjust to your preference and then do the same on the Recording tab (probably Stereo Mix)

Or go to - Control Panel > RealTek HD Audio Manager and do the same

You can also Right click whilst highlighting the above Playback and Recording device

I have come across many customers who are unaware of these adjustments as they are not obvious - but make a lot of improvement can be made with the adjustment to - Configure - Environment - Settings - Playback and Recording bit quality etc"

HTH

Brian

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
