Is there a true Bo Diddley Beat in BIAB? I've used the song search and can't find one.
Thanks

Dave,

Do you have a specific Bo Diddley song in mind? When I searched in the BiaB StylePicker I received a lot of hits on Bo Diddley songs.

StylePicker window with Bo Diddley search term.

Hello Jim, I've sampled through almost all of those tunes and none of them use the drum pattern that Bo Diddley used on "Hey Bo Diddley". They're so wide to the mark, that typing Bo Diddley into the song search shouldn't bring up any of them. the beat is basically a 3 / 2 clave with a New Orleans second line feel. the New Orleans beats come closest, but still just not the real thing.
Thanks for your response

Dave,

One of the many things that made Bo Diddley unique was his sense of timing. You may not be able to find an exact duplicate of the beat used in "Hey Bo Diddley" because the beat is unique to the song.

You may want to consider running listening tests of MIDI styles with MIDI drums. Then you can use the piano roll window to edit the drums to match what you want.

RB has a drum grid editor which may allow you to create the beat you want with midi drums and then export to BIAB. or work mainly in BIAB, open the file to finish in RB and then replace the drums with the beat you created in the drum grid editor.

The Bo Diddley Beat is worldfamous; everybody knows it (though not necessarily under this name) - here's a drummer showing it in detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH2N2zgf4MQ

I'm very surprised that it's NOT implemented in B.i.a.b. with all its emphasis on American stuff and patterns... I was so sure it was until I found this thread here - and am somewhat disappointed now since I need not just the beat but the whole pattern for a new song of mine right now and was sure I could manage to put up the playback with my B.i.a.b. .... frown

Norton music has exactly the BiaB Bo Diddley style that you are looking for:

Hi,
there is a basic Bo Diddley rhythm in midi style GEORGEM2:

GeorgeM2.STY. GeorgeM2 - 80s, sw.16 Rock
All MIDI. Quintet. Tempo=90 (65-120)
M1 Standard Drum Kit
M36: Fretless Elec. Bass
M91: Pad-Poly Synth
M26: Acoustic Guitar
M54: Voice Oohs
Memo: Loose swing 16th Rock feel w/ 5 instr: frt. bass, drums, ac. Guitar (w/ 'high-strung' tuning), poly synth. Oohs at 'b'. Ac. Guitar - palm-damped 'Bo-Diddley' strum. T= 90
Examples: Faith, Bye Bye Love

but yes, like MarioD says, take a listen to the Norton stuff too, it is very good; I have every Pop disk of him

Ok, but I don't want to spend $34 for one midi file I need...

But thanks for the suggestion!

Over the years I've also lamented the lack of a good Bo Diddley Real Drum track. I recently stumbled upon ModernFunk16thsSput that gets pretty close to my ears.

Hey, thanks; I'll try that!

Do you know if there's a thread (or any other option) where particular style wishes are being collected?

Does anyone know if PGM has added a Bo Diddley beat (RT) since this thread was started?

(a Bo Diddley beat is a second line/New Orleans Rhythm based on the clave you for example can hear in the song "Faith" by George Michael)

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
