I just got PT pro audio and recorded several tracks just to get a feel for the program. When I play it back, even though I have separate instruments on each track, I get the same instrument on all tracks. I've contacted PG and have not gotten much help. They suggested reinstalling which did no good. and changing certain setting which were already the way they suggested. I had PT a number of years ago and everything worked fine. I am getting really frustrated.
Tough to help without more details. please post back following details. sounds like user error to me possibly.
are we talking midi traks i assume ? if so… look at midi event editor , by any chance is a patch change overriding the patches youve set on each trak ? (is this an external midi file you imported ??) post a pic of CLASSICS VIEW showing patch settings. also a pic of TRAKS VIEW would be helpfull.
as i said more details please. if audio traks then thats a whole different aspect. if IN FACT they are midi traks be aware embedded patch changes in the midi data stream can override as i said, particularly its a 'gotchya' if someone isnt au fait with midi. caught me out yonks ago when i started out in midi. particularly when i tried to import a midi someone else had made that overrode my midi settings.
further details bout your rig would also be helpfull. midi keyboard ? your sound device ? etc etc so a complete picture can help people make intelligent helpfull comments in reply.
if one doesnt have a midi background its best to get a book on midi.
with respect you need to spend time going thru' all the various audio and midi features of ptw which are very extensive for such little money. also there are extensive FAQ's on this pg site ..
it is difficult to help you without you posting back the info requested. SO PLEASE POST THE REQUESTED INFO AND PICS so others can help you as well as what you're trying to do in ptw.. i ask you again.. ARE WE TALKING MIDI TRAKS ??
assuming midi …the event list (i use realband which has added features).. try F2 to bring up event list.
i just cant cover lotss of things within the confines of forum posts as i would be posting for pages/ages…as ptw has so many features. so please post back requested info//pics so people can post back the proper info.
If all tracks play the same sound, usually that means all tracks are either: 1. On the same MIDI Channel so sending to the same patch 2.On tracks that do not have a patch change message to tell the synth which sound to play 3. On tracks not routed to the expected sound source with the expected patch
MIDI can be complicated, but if we know you have at least a basic understanding of how it works we can avoid making simple suggestions you already know, and drill down into the root problem faster. For example, you stated
Quote:

How do you have 'separate instruments on each track', and exactly what synth are they sending that data to? Knowing if it is a hardware or software synth would be a great starting point

What you are saying is making some sense to me. Not sure where to check those things you mentioned. I had PT about 10 years ago. It was a different computer and sound card. My son built this computer for me so I'm not really sure what synth is being used. Before I just assigned an instrument to a channel and that's what I got on playback. The only thing I'm seeing in PT is CayoteWT as the default synth. The only thing I'm getting from PG Music is delete and reinstall which does nothing. I really don't know how to separate the different patches to the assigned channel. It seems to me that the program should do that automatically. Thanks for your help. Sorry for being so dense. I just thought it would be good to use to make some backing tracks for my single. Especially with having audio now to do backup vocals. If you have any further suggestions I'm all ears.
OK Coyote WT is a start, it has the ability to play different GM sounds. Are you assigning the sound by right-clicking the track and selecting the [right-click] Patch Select Dialogue, or by another method? If you are using the above method; when the Patch Select pop up displays, do you see the Patch List as showing General MIDI or something else?
Lastly, do you have the check box in Options-Preferences-MIDI-MIDI Devices enabled for "Reroute all MIDI to default synth"?
With those steps you *should start hearing different sounds using Coyote WT as the default synth. At least those are the basics, unless something else is set wrong. But usually that gets you on the right track.

I figured it out. I loaded a couple of demos and looked at those. As I said when I had PT before I just assigned and instrument to a track and that was that as they say. I see that there are a couple of other steps in this version. The thing that really gets my shorts in a know is that the folks a PG Music couldn't tell me this. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.
Glad it helped. Maybe go to your original post and mark it as resolved (?) It may help others that search for the same issue. As well as letting us know which step you were missing.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
