Another write with John Vaughan from 3 years ago.
Unfortunately, I have lost the original BIAB track.

Soldiers Field © 2019 vaughan/arnold
V:
The sun is rising o'er the meadow
as I walk the hallowed ground
Trees have grown, casting shadows
The lark sings a pleasing sound
V:
Much greener grass than I remember
Pastures lush where wounds have healed
Wildflowers grow in swathes of splendour
But this for me is Soldiers Field
C:
If this soil one day reveals
the misery concealed
of a hundred years ago
still the seed shall grow
for the young ones of all nations
when to Soldiers Field they go
Inst:
V:
I walk alone here night and day
I stand beside you as you greave
my soul can find no place to lay
except upon this Soldiers Field
C:
Outro: I am that whisper on the breeze
and the rustling of the leaves
So here's to those who plant the seeds
Here we lie on Soldiers Field

Nice work Vic, has a Mark Knopfler feel to it and would be a great addition to a war documentary.
Is that an accordion I hear?

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Hi, Bass Thumper.
Isn't it strange how people hear things differently.
I never thought of Mark Knopfler, even though I'm a fan.

Yes, it is an accordion.

Thanks for the comments.

Great band for a terrific song, Vic. Interesting with the accordion, which often found its way to many soldiers' fields. The mandolin is another excellent choice. I really like your vocal, and the lyrics tell a sad story of forgetting what it takes to make a soldier's field.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Yes,the accordion was very popular years ago until the guitar was "discovered".
I remember my uncle playing one when I was a child.

Nice storytelling, I like your song a lot.

Like Thumber said, dial down the reverb a bit and you're definitely in Mark Knopfler territory.

You may be right about the reverb but I needed that sort of ghostly effect.

A lovely presentation.
Calm, strong, narrative/voice.
I did think "o'er" was an odd choice visually as well as in the flow.

Cheers

Really well done, band sounds good and I like the write.

As I've said before, I really like your vocal, perfect for this type of material.

The spoken word part at the end was unexpected but worked a treat. Nice!

As Dave mentioned you have the perfect voice for this type of material. It reminds me a bit of Gordon Lightfoot. The band is just right and the lyrics are very good. I enjoyed it much, Tom

Thank you, Ray.
O'er, is a bit of "poetic contraction".
Used in, among other songs, Pete Townsend's "Love reigns o'er me".

I suppose I could have used "The sun is rising on the meadow" but I wanted a little old world, "hymn" flavour in the lyric.

Thanks for the appreciation.

I was concerned the spoken outro may be viewed as pretentious and I would hate that.
Glad to hear it seemed ok to you.

Wow Vic, this was a fabulously written song - and the band you put behind it was a perfect fit with your vocal and the story it told. It made the story really came to life. As I listened I was brought back to a roadside turnout in Colorado many years ago, when as a kid I was vacationing with my Grandparents. I was throwing rocks into a river when I looked to see another older couple speaking with my grandparents. Suddenly the group of four were in tears and embracing each other. I later learned that my Grandad's unit was the one that had liberated the town in which the other couple had lived in Poland during WWII. It had also liberated the POW camp where the man had been imprisoned and scheduled for execution. There have been several soldiers in my family, some who never made it back. You've covered a lot of stories and memories in this 3:40 song. Congratulations on a putting such a great song together, Vic. It is very meaningful.

Nice write, and the arrangement fits like a glove.

The folk instrumentation - especially the accordion and mandolin - are an excellent choice.

I also hear a bit of the "Mark Knopfler" storytelling vibe.

Hi Brad.
That's a nice story about your grandparents.
Many families were hit by war tragedies. My grandparents too.
The subject saddens me. Me as someone who is lucky enough not to have had that experience.
Thanks for your comments.

This is a lovely song that we’ll think of on our weekly visit to the local Veterans Cemetery where Janice’s parents are laid to rest.

Your lyric speaks well to the thoughts we often have of all the soldiers and their lives and families.

The accordion and the mandolin are perfectly suited to your vocal and the lyric.

Well done!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
