Story

So about a week ago, a young lady called me up and said she was thinking about joining my Nashville Songwriter's group but had no idea if she was any good. Her name is Rachel Cintula.

She asked if she could read me some stuff on the phone so I could tell her if she was any good.

The lyrics below were part of that conversation.

I said:

"YES."

She asked if I knew a guy who could write music and produce. I said I knew the guy.

She joined the next morning.

This is one week later.

She has about 50 more now in our drop box.

It's going to be a busy year.

DIRTY HANDS, CLEAN MONEY
By Rachel Cintula and David Snyder

https://soundcloud.com/david-snyder-gigs3/dirty-hands-clean-money

Tempo 75 Soulful Country Hard Back beat

V1

With a shovel in your calloused hands
work taught you how to be a man
Some days you turn a wrench,
some days you drive a nail
Every day you pray to keep it together
Come hell or high water or stormy weather
Split wood, stack bales
You see your family, and you can’t fail

P-CH

Because you can’t be bribed,
And you can't be bought,
And you’ll always be described,
As a man who's earned

what he’s got..... with

CH

Dirty hands, dirty hands
Clean money, clean money

V2

Daddy you had brains but you never chased grades
No wall of degrees but you sure got paid
And you were never ashamed
to be a member of the trades
Because you knew that's how this country was made
Come hell or high water you were never afraid
And you knew you would always be
The hero of this family

P-CH

Because you can’t be bribed,
And you can't be bought,
And you always be described,
As a man, who's earned
what he’s got..... with

CH

Dirty hands, dirty hands
Clean money, clean money

BR

I’m not saying one path is better than the other
Cause you taught me to respect one another
If your hands are clean and so is your money
We at least agree on one thing honey

P-CH

And if you can’t be bribed,
And you can't be bought,
And you’ll always be remembered
As a person whose daddy
Taught a lot …. with

CH
Dirty hands, dirty hands
Clean money,clean money

FADE

With a shovel in your calloused hands
work taught you how to be a man
with dirty hands, dirty hands, clean money

David, It looks like you have a new lyricist in your arsenal!

She wrote some super lyrics and you put them perfectly into a song.

I liked the backing band and think this is better as a country song than a rock song but that is only my opinion.

A great collaboration.

WOW! Instant collaboration of the highest degree. Love the idea of the song, and the way you two brought it out together. Excellent lyrics and a really good write. David & Rachel, so well done. Glad you made the call, Rachel.

Enjoy whatever happens!

David & Rachel...

A good write. Fresh and original.

Nice tracks. Has a nice "today" sound...

The vocal is a bit high-EQ-ish (good other than that)

Really looking forward to the next 50...

David, you're right - she can write! I really liked the song, and personally, I like the style of music you put with it. I thought it fit the song very well. Good song all the way around. Keep encouraging her, I'm anxious to hear more from you two.

This is FANTASTIC. Superb lyrics, of course - but, for me, what makes it is that you invariably keep things real when you sing, David. And that's sadly very rare. Bravo to both of you, what a song.

Pretty cool stuff, I think her writing and your singing/composing go very well together. And with 50 more songs available.... I'm looking forward to them smile

Production-wise, I'd expect dirty guitars on a song about dirty hands, i.e. instead of a country vibe, a rockier vibe might convey the message more intensely.
But that's just me growing up in non-country country wink

Ha! The song went in the opposite direction I expected. laugh

Good write. Not pop or commercial - not a criticism - but very much the sort of vibe I'd get from a collaboration with you.

Sounds like you two are a good match!

A good construction David.
I like the band, arrangement and performances.
I know the narrative would be popular with the target demographic as it's part nostalgia, part memoir, part fantasy and an huge chunk of the American dream.
