I've noticed a problem with BIAB. I have 32 measures of chords that I want repeated and then another 32 measures I want to move to and repeat. I enter the 64 measures then highlight the first 32, select Edit->Song Form->Repeats/Codas/1st-2ndEnding. Then select Repeats radio button, and Okay-Make Repeat button. Then I repeat for the last 32 measures. This all works great!

If I save this then use the display to enter new chords for the 64 measures and save as a different name, it works for the first time but then plays the old set of chords on the repeat.
I'm essentially using the first file as a template but BIAB is not repeating what is shown. It has somehow stored the old chords and uses them as a repeat.

Should I be doing this in a different way or is this a bug?

It's possible for the chords in the repeated section to be different but be hidden from view. In the Views area of the toolbar, click the Fakesheet button and click the first menu item so it's unchecked ('Display Chord sheet in Fakesheet mode'). This will allow you to see all of the bars in your song including the repeat.

Yes, I suppose what is happening under the covers is a cheap cut and paste even though the display indicates two repeat signs at measure 1 and 32 with a 2x indicating it is reaping that section twice. I assume this is true since after I have done the first operation, what was labeled bar 33 now becomes labeled 65 (pushed out for the paste).
I also tried the using the "Song Form Dialog". Indicating measure 1-32 as A and 33-64 as B, then asked for form AABB. BIAB does the same cheap thing; copying A twice and B twice.
This behavior makes editing a section marked with repeats or as an A or B section very cumbersome. After opening a saved file marked like this and editing it, the display is no longer WYSIWYG the repeated areas are actually shadow saved and that is what gets played unless you clear all the repeats and redo them.

The repeat symbols are intended to be a way for you to view/print your song like it would appear in a Fake book. When you have a repeated section, the repeated bars do not disappear, Band-in-a-Box still has to generate parts for them. The parts will be slightly different, as you would expect if you listened to musicians play the song, and the melody and soloist might not play exactly the same way each time. So the bars are there as they need to be, but they can be conveniently hidden from view if you select "Fakesheet mode".

There are two ways that you can create a repeat. In the repeats dialog, if you have "generate new bars" selected, then BIAB will add in the repeated bars. If unchecked, then it will use bars that already exist.

I would suggest writing your entire song form as you would play it the whole way through. Then go back if you want to add a repeat, and leave the 'generate new bars' unchecked.

Andrew,
I'm building a song based on _PIANOLIN.STY and repeated parts are more than slightly different from 1st repeat in my case. More precisely Piano1 and Piano2 tracks are completely silent during 2nd repeat.
Is there a possibility to create repeats as exact copy and let user to change/regenerate particular parts afterwards with MultiRiff feature? Or any other workaround?

EDIT: I made another new song based on _PIANOLIN.STY (on my second machine) and this time repeats work as expected.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
