Please indulge this question from a technomoron lol. So I'm running BIAB through the external UltraPAK HD (not enough space on my "C" drive to install it)

I've only begun to create stuff with it, but here's my question: where do you save and store your music when using it? Is there a goodly amount of space on the UltraPAK to accumulate songs/compositions, or is there a proper method when saving so as to place your work back on your "C" drive, in the Windows "Music" folder for instance?

The PG Music Ultra PAK external hard drive is 500 GB and is a little more than half full. The empty space can be used for storage. However, it is a good practice to leave about 15 - 20% of space empty for Windows to use for file management.

I would create two folders on the external hard drive, one to store program updates throughout the year and one for song projects.

I generally create a song project folder on the Windows desktop. Everything associated with the song project is stored in the song project folder. Once the song is complete you could move the song project folder from the Windows desktop to the song folder of the external hard drive.

That is a tricky question.
If you just saving BIAB songs, without exporting individual WAV stems to be saved to the same "song" folder (I do that), a 3-5 GB should be all you need, which should last you long time. You can always move that folder, when you upgrade computer or storage.

For easy access, I made a folder "BIAB projects" on desktop, where I save arrangements from BIAB.

But to answer your question more directly, there should be enough space for reasonable amount of songs saved on that external HD with Ultrapack.

P.S. If you are exporting individual WAV stems for DAW or such and saving to same folder, space required would depend on your usage.

That there is plenty of space on the USB drive for your song files, has been answered.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a 'proper' method. We all probably do it somewhat differently, and no one is wrong as long as it works for them and they don't lose their files. In that sense, this isn't a tech question at all. It's a choice of how you organize things.

I save my song files in many places, including a computer off-site and a travelling USB drive.

Interestingly, one place I would NOT store my BIAB music song files is on the Windows 'Music' folder of the boot drive. Three reasons: 1) there is enough other stuff that Windows programs are going to stick there, 2) I like all my files of a specific type in a specific folder, so I can back up just those files easily, and 3) I don't store user files on the boot drive, in case I have to reinstall Windows or replace the boot drive.

I appreciate all the info and suggestions.

For now, since I'm just beginning to create songs, I'll just use the UltraPAK drive for song storage.

Does that statement apply in any way to using the BIAB plugin in a DAW?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
