I have rough home mixes of the songs that will be included on an album that are just fairly ok. I have some studio tracks and will be going back in the studio (when I have more money) to have the remaining tracks re-recorded then full album mixed and mastered.

While I put the funding together, can I send the album in to the copyright office and will that copyright carry over to the songs once I have the final, professionally done, masters? Or do I need to have the final product done before copyright?

The songs will be essentially unchanged just much better recording and final mixing.

That will work just fine for copyright purposes.

Only if you edit or change the music in a way that would make it different. A word or two, a different chord, or even a different arrangement of the structure is not enough to warrant a new copyright. If it's rewritten to the point it's a different song, yes, you might want to register it again.

I answered those questions and more here. Copyright thread

The short version: you can register a number of songs Unpublished on the same form. As has been posted already, as long as there are no significant changes, no reason to re-register.

Released masters are Published and different rules apply. It’s one song to a form PA Published and it can include one SR. Each released version requires a new form SR to protect the Sound Recording. The PA Published remains, again, as long as there are no significant changes.

There is now a separate registration for albums that includes artwork.

OK now - That is more clearly stated and exactly the info I was looking for - I probably should have been more clear myself as I am wanting to copyright both the lyrics/music as well as the performance. Sounds like most cost effective is waiting to have the project completely finalized and submit that CD or associated files.
Thanks!
