Been away (unavoidably busy) for a while ... argh. No time to write original songs ... however, the other day I was rifling through BIAB RealStyles, looking for something to spark inspiration, when I came across this one ... long story short, this was born, a couple of hours or so, later. See what you think? smile Words and music are, of course, public domain. Thanks for listening and for any comments!

Brahms: Lullaby (my arrangement)

LYRICS:

Lullaby and good night,
With pink roses bedight,
With lilies o'er spread
Is my baby's sweet head.
Lay thee down now and rest,
May your slumber be blessed.
Lay thee down now and rest,
May your slumber be blessed.

Lullaby and good night,
You're your mother's delight,
Shining angels beside
My darling abide.
Soft and warm is your bed,
Close your eyes and rest your head.
Soft and warm is your bed,
Close your eyes and rest your head.

Sleepyhead, close your eyes,
We are right here beside you
We'll protect you from harm,
You will wake up in our arms.
Guardian angels are near,
So sleep on with no fear.
Guardian angels are near,
So sleep on with no fear.

James,

Beautiful work as usual... Love the arrangement and mix. The flute really sounds superb.

Eleanor was a great choice - her voice fits so well with this production.

Excellent!

James, very nice arrangement and instrument choices. Eleanor sounds quite nice, Asterian a bit less so to my ears. Both sounded forced in the faster vocal passage. A slower tempo might suit them better, but I know nothing about synth vocals. THANKS for posting!

Hi James.

This is really nice listening. I congratulate you on a fine effort and terrific arrangement. In all my many years on this planet, I have never once heard all the verses to this song (which is quite amazing when I think about it). I thoroughly enjoyed the musical journey. It's a beautiful song, and your use of Asterian and Eleanor is excellent. While I'm used to listening to this melody at a slower speed, I did not find it distracting to listen to this faster tempo. And that counterpoint melody that you created! Wow! It was very inventive and excellent ear-candy. You really grabbed my attention with that smile

All the very best,
--Noel

Hi James,
That was really sweet. I feel ready for my nap now. I agree on the flute being a great choice, and I too had no idea about all the lyrics. My whole life I thought what followed "lullaby and goodnight" was "do do do do do do do". So, educational as well as restful!

Hi James,

Such a soft and tender arrangement! The backing tracks are perfect. The synth voices speak for themselves - perfect for the tune and arrangement. You did an excellent job putting this together. Very well done!

Wishing you the very best.

Alan

Hello James,

Brahms' melody is sung so gently that it refreshes the soul.
There are various creative touches, such as men and women singing separately, singing together, playing with the flute, and modulating the key.
The chord progression at the end is very pleasant.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Thanks, Ron. I should have thought about the slower tempo, but there we are, now. Too lazy to go back and change it, I guess, although I will give it a second listen and see just "how bad it is", haha. Thanks for listening and for commenting! smile

Noel: It's great to see you back on here. Your comment is kind and thoughtful, as always. I had the song at a slightly faster tempo because I read somewhere that Brahms meant this lullaby, secretly, as a love song for someone he loved (possibly Clara Schumann?). Anyway, once I read that, I thought I'd make it into a slightly faster (nevertheless, not too fast) waltz. Anyway, really glad you liked it smile

When am I going to hear a new song from you? I miss your wonderful, positive songs! smile

Okay. Goodnight. Man, if Mahavishnu Orchestra had a version of this, I'd use as my alarm clock. And your version, James, would be the one to use for summoning dreams. Very cool how you still managed a key-change in there.

Enjoy whatever happens!

I really enjoyed this. My comments would be that, and this is in no way a criticism (it's your song), is that I would slow it down a little. Also, your first vocal sounds great, but I would bring it down a little in the mix. Loved the harmonies between the two voices.

I mention the slowing down, and understand, I'm a guy that likes things up-tempo usually, but as a lullaby, a little slower would really go a long way to making this version awesome. I think, too, I'm influenced by the recent YouTube video I saw regarding Glen Campbell (along with Jimmy Webb) talking about the tempo of the song Galveston; this version puts it in a whole new light.

Hi, James.

A very pretty version. I also found the tempo a bit rushed.

But what's the point of doing a song if you're going to do it exactly like everyone else? Better to try something that matches your own vision that please other people and be unhappy with the result. laugh

John, I loved that slowed down version of "Galveston."

I really like Eleanor's voice here. The male voice sounds less natural. Nice production. Maybe a little slower. The flute was an effective way to bring the song to a close.
