Hi there
I've had BIAB for a while now but first time posting here - apologies if this topic has been covered previously
I'm doing a version of Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedance Clearwater Revival. In the intro, there is a syncopated bass pattern in bar 4 and bar 6 (and elsewhere in the song.) Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I recreate that?
Any help much appreciated.
Regards
Ed

Hi Ed, Welcome to the forum and to Band-in-a-Box.

One easy way to get a song riff into your song is to obtain a midi file of the song then import the midi into Band-in-a-Box. That brings up the question, where to find midi song files? +++ HERE +++ is an article that lists eight websites that offer midi song files.

Another way is to use a program or application to separate the vocals and instruments in an audio file into audio stems. Then use a stem as a guide to recreate the performance. +++ Audacity +++ is a free audio editor that has audio file split into stems technology.

I'm sure other forum members will share more ideas with you.

Jim's suggestions are great. If you're looking for a quick way to get that bass run into your track, finding a midi file is a solid option. You can easily import it into Band-in-a-Box like Jim mentioned. If you're trying to work directly with audio, using Audacity to split stems is a good free option too.

Welcome! Jim and Roycol provided solid suggestions. Playable RealTracks is perhaps another way. But since you're new, I'll emphasize that BiaB isn't designed to duplicate specific song licks, though it can be manipulated to do so. MIDI tracks would be the FASTEST way to get the specific lick you are looking for, or even a complete backing track. Good luck!

This is what the bass riff looks like in notation. It is in 4/4 time and you can just do what others have suggested entering it as midi.

Hi
Thank you so much for all the feedback.
Apologies, but I've not used midi before - have just been using the real tracks. Can anyone point me in the direction of a simple step-by-step guide as to how I would actually go about using midi to achieve this?
I'm suspected for some time now that I'm only skimming the potential of BIAB and this would help my learning curve.
Many thanks,
Ed

You don't need to do any MIDI directly ... it's a machine language rather than a user language.
In essence all you do is change the track from a RealTrack to a MIDI track and then enter the notes you want in either the notation window or the piano-roll window. I usually enter the notes eith by import orthrough the notation window, then adjust with the piano-roll. The piano-roll allows fairly easy adjustment of timing and velocity. On most tracks, you'll then want to 'freeze' the track so BiaB doesn't regenerate it.

The obvious alternative is to record MIDI into BiaB straight from your instrument, e.g. keyboard/wind-controller/MIDI-guitar.

For that syncopated bass pattern, always try to cross the timing of the notes. Yes, concentrates on hitting every other beat to make it actually bounce and sway rhythmically. That way it needs to be done gradually and try to pinpoint the exact bar that it is placed between. You could also utilise the MIDI editor in BIAB to manipulate the notes until it was to your desired quality.

There's also the Playable Real Tracks to tinker with.
