I'd say rather than have all this wisdom and experience once again be lost and forgotten in the clutter of thousands and thousands of threads, someone should capture the relevant information here in a white paper for the next time this subject gets raised . . . and you know it will. How cool would it be to organize a comprehensive document that would capture actual experience with specific UPS manufactures and part numbers? There is also quite a lot more to this subject than has been discussed so far. For example, we haven't addressed the basic tradeoff between lead-acid vs Li-ion battery options or how one should go about sizing the unit to meet the variety of needs musicians have. Home use/road use? Limited budget/no price barriers? What to avoid/what is reccomended? Rack mounted/desktop tower? Etc. Heck, Gordon's great war story could even be included. Maybe my real calling should have been a librarian or an archivist? . . . on 2nd thought, no thanks

I imagine we all have war stories.
I ran an electronics store fifty years ago. The contractors wired the outlets wrong on the wall where I had high-end stereo equipment like amps, turntables and tuners. They kept failing so I bought in my circuit tester and fixed the backward wiring. No more shocks.
I carry a new LED circuit tester to every gig. I also keep long high-amperage extension cords in the car, along with my piano tuning hammers, batteries, wrenches pliers and other hand tools, soldering gun, spare mics, spare cords to amps, spare speaker and guitar cables etc. Can’t tell you how many gigs I’ve saved.
I think you should get writing, Steve. Put it in the Tips and Tricks forum.

I think you should get writing, Steve. Put it in the Tips and Tricks forum. Who? Me!!?? I'm the student on this subject. The best I could do is help edit/organize such a document. Indeed, I'm still narrowing my choises for my first purchase, so I'm as green as they come In my humble opinion and based soley on the responses in this thread, I'd say that Gordon and you are the subject-matter-experts regarding all things UPS. I think you guys would make great co-captains. That said, I spent 5 minutes thinking about a structure for such a paper, which I'm sure could be improved. I have a number of them throughout the house and studio. The big benefit is that they give me time to shut down. None let me continue past around 15-20 minutes. All of them let me put some units on the protection circuits while leaving others (additional monitors, printer etc.) out.
When we went solar last year, I expected that the big batteries installed with the system would eliminate the need — then we had a 12 hour power outage in the middle of the Silicon Valley. The changeover to the big batteries had a noticeable time lag of about a second—much longer than my UPS units so they are still in the system.
Besides three UPS boxes for my studio, my wife's and the router/backup system, I have additional boxes with 1500W batteries for my chair and bed without which, I could not get out when the power goes down.
So called 'power conditioners' are useless for this task.
