Distributing ones original songs and music.

there are various sites on the net that offer free distro
to platforms like apple/spotify etc etc.

eg...

https://jumpstr.io/

and others.

anyone used any of them ? i'm curious.
just looking for alternatives....too many songs...lol.

thanks.

Be very careful. They don’t say where their revenue stream comes from and I’m not buying the claim that they expect to sell premium services to the major distributors.

Tons of complaints that the site is buggy and that uploading to Spotify is not an option currently. Most complaints concern songs not being credited properly and not being uploaded to AppleMusic. It appears that they don’t upload to YouTube either according to other complaints. So what do you want for nothing?

Much of the legalese on their site is flat out wrong and contains a lot of armchair expert nonsense about copyright. Some mistakes are so obvious that it’s clear no US attorney or IP professional has reviewed the pages. OTOH, their restrictions are fairly sound so that’s good. They do recommend that everyone using their site only do so after their attorney has reviewed it—no doubt that almost everyone will ignore that good advice. I can’t tell what country they’re based in other than not the USA or EU.

That said, I am thinking about releasing my band’s latest (and last ever) album there at first. They claim to be non-exclusive which will allow me to pursue other avenues. My late partner was 89 when he passed a few weeks ago and his dementia was a major obstacle these last couple years — everyone else involved expects this project to be stillborn on release with zero chance of revenue. Free is perfect. Unfortunately, jumpstr has a horrible reputation for placing non-English songs and our only slim chance for a hit is in Spanish. But non-exclusive and one never knows.

Not free and thus off topic. But we remain very pleased with DistroKid. Seamless uploading, rapid distribution and they handle all licensing of a cover for $12 a year requiring nothing but one check box. Their “bank” is great including a section labeled “excoriating detail” 😀 that shows every cent earned by each song on every platform. And their free promo art is excellent. We pay $23 a year for the single musician plan. FWIW and YMMV, etc.

I am looking at Distrokid as well. My attorney does not like the Ts & Cs but she hates them for all platforms and thinks that Distrokid is less onerous than some of the others. As long as you don’t neglect your account, you’re good but, as we get older…

Jumpstr does not have some of the Ts & Cs that cause you to lose your rights if your account is abandoned—being free, they can’t take action against you if your bill becomes delinquent, right?

I’m now the sole leader but, at age 70, I’m not the oldest remaining member. Gotta think about these things, ya know?

This thread reminded me to check my DistroKid account... it's red hot!
I uploaded 5 original songs in July of 2023, and so far I've earned $00.18

one Q....is it easy to delete a song one doesnt want on the net
anymore ?

fyi...im just trying to cover a few bucks each year. that my mad need to create songs costs...lol.
i dont expect much.

imho the major challenge for any creator is lots of people in the world dont visit an unknowns site compared to the big names.
just human psychology and ennui etc.

happiness.

https://blog.boostcollective.ca/30-best-distrokid-alternatives

some interesting ones.
do any standout for you all ??
its just i'm looking for a soundcloud alternative and hopefully get more song plays.

anyone useing any of these services ??

i woiuld appreciate any input.

frankly i dont mind spending bucks on a service if i'm getting some money back.
fyi i'm not greedy. it would just be nice to make a few hundred bucks a year to help with my gear lust...lol.
i'm not asking for the moon. ive just got loads of songs done with pg apps as well as in pro studios....,and i have the same feelings as Dr PG...
its all about the fun quotient....just wanna cover some of my costs.

thanks.

I signed up with Ditto Music about two years ago. It’s $19 a year. Uploaded my CD with about 14 songs and a couple of singles. So far I’ve accumulated a whopping $1.40 in royalties They don’t distribute anything to you until you get at least $25 in your account. I probably won’t live that long. 😂

That seems to (sadly) sum it up for many participants in the music platform industry. frown

Couldn’t remember how many streams I had to produce that whopping potential payment, so I checked. Had 993 streams for $1.58, so that’s about 0.16 CENTS per stream. Below is a screenshot of the various payers.

My most recent quarterly BMI statement for publishing royalties of my originals on two recordings showed thousands of plays/streams over four pages, with a grand total of $2.20. Let's celebrate. You're buying.

😀😀😀😀 Good luck. We just passed $100 earnings and that was for 31,000 streams over 20 months. It was mostly via Spotify. And this includes getting placed on some popular playlists. BUT, for us it’s just for fun. Cool to know folks other than family and friends listen.

Yeah... my ASCAP royalties aren't much better. Some of my commercial beds get broadcast now and then—only thing that keeps those sheets from being toilet paper.

Many of us old school types have music going back to when it actually paid.

As I alluded to at the beginning of this thread, my latest album is stillborn. The group member who took over the project was completely out of touch with today's reality — unfortunately, it was easier not to contradict him. The attitude was to fix it after he died. Now that he's gone, the other engineer and I expect to undo much of the last couple years but it still has 0% commercial success. I'll be having a conference call next week to let everyone know the final reality-check and how much it will cost to distribute. They can split the costs with me, distribute their own songs only or abandon it. Most of the songs are covers. Copyright registrations alone will cost $630 — not on my dime, thank you very much. At least in the US, we can register the SR (sound recordings) and the PA (work + publishing) on works we own for the same fee (SRs only on cover tunes).

It's quite possible that the only people who get to hear it will be those attending the wake the band is throwing in less than three weeks.
