New York: Roberta Flack, the Grammy-winning singer and pianist whose intimate vocal and musical style made her one of the top recording artists of the 1970s and an influential performer long after, died Monday. She was 88.
She died at home surrounded by her family, publicist Elaine Schock said in a statement. Flack announced in 2022 that she had ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and could no longer sing.

‘When I first saw, “Play Misty for Me” in 1971, I was blown away and wanted to tell the projectionist to back up the film and play ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” again. I knew the song from Kingston Trio, Peggy Seeger and Peter, Paul & Mary — recordings had been out for many years.
I had seen Roberta Flack on the Mike & Merv daytime shows many times but she usually performed instrumentally on piano. So I went to Tower wondering when the album was coming out, then learned her album with the song was a few years old—they got that question a lot—and had to have it.

Not only was she a gifted singer but I understand a child prodigy on the piano.
There is a documentary of her on PBS/American Masters.
The "aircraft story" behind Killing me Softly is quite interesting.
RIP, Roberta, you and many others helped enrich my younger years.
