Band in a Box has UserTracks. These are tracks users record of their own playing and these recordings can be used the same as Band in a Box's RealTracks. A single performance of a UserTrack is called an Artist Performance File. Artist Performance Files can have transcription embedded for notation and guitar tab if applicable. Underlying midi data on the RealTrack channel provides notation and piano roll display. I would like a video showing how tab is added to notation in Band in a Box?

< ChatGPT said: In Band-in-a-Box (BIAB), guitar tablature (TAB) is added to notation using embedded MIDI data combined with fretboard information that BIAB associates with the guitar performance. Here's how this works, particularly for RealTracks, UserTracks, and Artist Performance Files:
🎸 How TAB Is Displayed in Band-in-a-Box 1. MIDI Data Provides the Notes The RealTrack or UserTrack has accompanying MIDI data that mirrors the audio performance (or is at least close to it).
This MIDI data is used by BIAB to generate standard notation, piano roll, and guitar tab views.
2. String and Fret Mapping BIAB assigns each MIDI pitch to a specific string and fret combination on a virtual guitar.
This mapping is what produces TAB, not just the pitch. For example, a MIDI note for E4 could appear as:
String 1 (high E), fret 0, or
String 2 (B), fret 5, etc.
BIAB chooses the most logical string/fret combo unless overridden.
3. Guitar Settings Matter The TAB display depends on:
Tuning (standard EADGBE or custom)
Number of strings (6-string, 7-string, etc.)
Capo position (which BIAB can account for)
These settings are accessible via the Notation Window → Guitar Settings.
4. For Artist Performance Files When an Artist Performance File (.MGU or .SGU with an associated .WAV or .WMA) is used, and it includes embedded MIDI and notation metadata, BIAB can:
Display TAB derived from that MIDI.
Sync notation and tab to the audio if the timing is accurate.
5. Embedded Transcriptions Some RealTracks and Artist Performance Files come with embedded hand-transcribed notation and tab by PG Music. These are superior to auto-generated versions and appear more like sheet music with proper phrasing and fingering.
🛠️ How to View or Adjust Tab in BIAB Open the Notation Window (Ctrl+W or click the notation icon).
Click the [Guitar] button at the top to switch to the Guitar window or view the tab line beneath standard notation.
Use the Guitar Settings to change tuning, capo, etc.
If MIDI is not showing tab, ensure that:
The track is assigned to a guitar-type instrument.
The channel includes proper MIDI note range for guitar (E2–E6).
⚠️ Notes & Limitations Auto-generated tab from MIDI won’t always reflect how a real guitarist would finger a part.
UserTracks must include MIDI and transcription info to support full notation/tab.
RealTracks without MIDI or transcription will not generate useful tab—notation might appear blank or inaccurate.
For accurate tab, embedding MIDI and transcription during creation of a UserTrack is essential.
If you're creating your own UserTracks and want good notation and tab:
Make sure to include a MIDI performance aligned with the audio.
Use PG Music’s UserTrack creation utilities to associate the MIDI file with your audio.
Optionally, edit the transcription manually to refine tab and notation.
Would you like a step-by-step guide to creating a UserTrack with full transcription and tab support?
You said: Yes. I would like a step-by-step guide to creating a UserTrack with full transcription and tab support
ChatGPT said: Perfect! Creating a UserTrack with full transcription and guitar tab support in Band-in-a-Box involves recording your audio performance, capturing or aligning it with MIDI, and packaging it correctly. Below is a step-by-step guide tailored for musicians who want both accurate notation and tab views of their performance, just like a RealTrack.
🎛️ STEP-BY-STEP: Create a UserTrack with Full Transcription and Tab Support ✅ WHAT YOU NEED Band-in-a-Box (latest version recommended)
A DAW or recording setup to record your audio
A clean and properly timed MIDI file matching your performance
A clear understanding of chord progressions and bar structure
Basic file and folder management
STEP 1: 🎙️ RECORD THE AUDIO PERFORMANCE Record your guitar performance to a specific chord progression and tempo. Use BIAB or a DAW to generate the backing track if needed.
The chord progression must be simple and clearly played. Examples:
C / / / | G / / / | Am / / / | F / / / |
Record multiple variations across styles, keys, and tempos if you want a more flexible UserTrack (optional for advanced users).
🔊 Tip: Record dry audio (no FX) and keep background noise to a minimum. Use WAV or WMA format.
STEP 2: 🎹 CREATE MATCHING MIDI PERFORMANCE You can:
Play the same part on a MIDI guitar or keyboard, or
Manually transcribe your audio into a MIDI file in a DAW or BIAB
The MIDI notes should:
Match your phrasing and timing as closely as possible
Be within standard guitar range (E2 to E6)
Be quantized lightly to retain feel, but not too tightly
🎯 This MIDI file is what BIAB uses to generate notation and tab.
STEP 3: 🎼 ALIGN THE MIDI & AUDIO IN A DAW Import both your recorded audio and the MIDI into a DAW.
Check:
They line up rhythmically
The MIDI follows your guitar phrasing
The start time matches the first bar (important!)
STEP 4: 🗂️ BUILD THE USERTRACK FOLDER STRUCTURE Create a folder:
Copy Edit \bb\RealTracks\UserTracks\YourName_YourInstrumentStyle\ Place your audio and MIDI files here:
Name your WAV file like: GuitarEv16_85_C.wav (This means: Guitar, Even 16th feel, 85 bpm, key of C)
Name your MIDI file exactly the same, but .MID GuitarEv16_85_C.MID
Optionally, include more files with different chords/tempos to make the UserTrack more versatile.
STEP 5: 🧠 BUILD THE USERTRACK USING BIAB Open BIAB.
Go to: [File] → [Open Special] → [UserTracks] → [UserTrack Wizard]
Follow the prompts:
Point BIAB to your folder
Confirm the name, tempo, feel (even/swing), key
Let BIAB scan and register your track
🛠️ BIAB will build a metadata file and index your WAV and MIDI files into a new UserTrack that behaves like a RealTrack.
STEP 6: 📜 EMBED TRANSCRIPTION & GUITAR TAB If the MIDI file is accurate and the instrument is marked as a guitar, BIAB will automatically:
Display notation from the MIDI
Generate TAB based on the MIDI notes + default string/fret logic
To tweak or refine the transcription:
Open the Notation Window on your track
Click [Notation Options]
Go to the Guitar Settings
Set tuning (Standard, Drop D, etc.)
Adjust capo, number of strings
Edit MIDI notes if necessary to reflect correct fingering or phrasing
STEP 7: 🎸 TEST YOUR USERTRACK Open a blank BIAB song
Assign your UserTrack using:
Right-click on the guitar track → Choose UserTrack
Enter a simple chord progression and press play
Check:
The audio plays and follows the chords
The notation shows your performance
TAB appears below the notation
✅ FINAL TOUCHES Add a ReadMe.txt file to the UserTrack folder with instructions or notes
Share your UserTrack or back it up
Optionally use PG Music’s UserTrack Naming Utility to clean up metadata
🎁 BONUS TIPS Practice clean timing – BIAB’s chord alignment is sensitive
Use BIAB-generated backing tracks as your chord guide when recording
Include multiple chord variations (e.g., C, C7, Cmaj7, C6) to improve reusability
If you’re familiar with RealBand, it can help assemble and align files visually
Would you like a downloadable checklist template for this process or a sample UserTrack folder to experiment with? >
