Ya, me too. So the past 5 months I have developed a new goal - Retired to make music - No Plan B. Actually, more specifically - Retired to Sing. I have been taking lessons with personal vocal coach including on-line with Chris Liepe at https://chrisliepe.com/. Never studied voice in my life, this is all new to me! Turns out, just like all the guitar Gods and piano prodigies on Youtube who appear to be more than human, there are vocalist who also have this same beyond-human gift. If you don't know Sam Ryder, let me introduce him in a video done by Chris which showcases Sam's vocal talent.

I'm a firm believer in setting goals for one's self; it's the best way to grow. And if you're not growing, you're dying.
Looks like your 'ice shanty' will be getting lots of use in the coming months.

I'm a firm believer in setting goals for one's self; it's the best way to grow. And if you're not growing, you're dying.

The bass players with Van drive me crazy with groove! You have never done one of his songs? I can only imagine you don't know his early works. Please listen to "Veedon Fleese" or "Into the Mystic" and consider vibing on one of those bass lines for your 100/100 project. . Yep, that’s the shanty I remember. I’m guessing when you close that door you’ve got all the acoustic treatment you need. I think part of my hesitation with Van’s material is simply that his musicians operate at a level I’m not nearly close to. The way his bass players phrase lines, the way they move through harmony, the way they weave thru the vocal parts, the technical control; it’s all miles above where I’m currently sitting. I’m not ashamed of that; it’s just my current reality as a 10 year old (on the bass). I respect the craft (their craft) too much and don’t want to butcher it. I’d rather approach it when I can at least do it partial justice. Dare I coin a term that I strive for? PPPN: Professionally Played Passing NotesA while ago I tried interpreting a popular Allman Brothers bass line and after a few weeks of struggle, I gave up. Then the same thing happened with a Carole King piece. These cats can play! Maybe I should invest in lessons like you and do it “the right way”. But I will take a look at Into the Mystic, that’s definately a masterpiece of a song. “When that fog horn blows . . .”

Geez, that guy has great pipes for sure. But saying I can learn how to sing from studying him as the video narrator suggests is like saying I can learn how to sprint by studying Carl Lewis.
Ok, that was a JOKE. Please don't dwell on it.
But honestly, I'm going to have to continue to target a more modest vocal end state, as my ceiling is SO much lower than his.
I am envious though. If I had that talent I'd be living under a bridge and busking for meal money.
And I do wish DrDan, Steve and everyone else the very best on their musical journeys. It's all about growth, or should be (to me).

PS> Never heard of Sam Ryder, but he sure can sing! He was 'discovered' on YouTube singing in his shower (IIRC) and picked for the UK's Eurovision Song Contest entry where Ukraine won and Sam came second. I think he mostly just sang for fun, then was launched.

I wanted to refer you to the full albums of " Veedon fleese" along with "Astrial Weeks". Not the song, Into the mystic. These two albums were the references I wanted to give you regarding the bass lines. I fully understand your response regarding covering Van's material. You and me both brother! But we all need to aim high.
