The topic of AI has been beat to death and elicits some pretty dramatic reactions in some people, to the point of cutting off communication rather than accepting and allowing for different points of view. Social media especially and songwriter groups specifically, are polarized into two distinct camps with very little common sense or ground being shared. One side says AI is the best thing since sliced bread and indoor plumbing, and the other says AI is of the devil and all that it entails.
So.... Moving along....
It seems that there's a big push from the record industry and streaming services to identify the music that is being created using AI. So much so that they are starting to tag and label the music with one of 2 different labels. One with a big AI in the box to signify 100% use of AI or nearly so, and a second with the smaller ai in the box signifying that there was some use of AI generated tracks used in the music.
I say we're approaching this the wrong way.
How about flipping it? Instead of the AI label, use a HU label to indicate that all the tracks and vocals are 100% human created, and a smaller hu in the box for music that contains tracks that are not human created but are in fact, simply human assisted. Use of VSTi plugins, tracks created by Band in a Box, etc, would be labeled as human assisted. They could still use the AI label for the 100% AI generated with a prompt music.

I like your idea of labelling by focussing on what it is rather than what it’s not - from a human creativity starting point.
I agree with the idea of BIAB tracks being ‘human-assisted’, because I generate them at a push of a button, as contrasted with performing myself or rounding up some session musos. My melody, lyrics, chords, arrangement and production would already be credited to me through traditional crediting labels. What I am unsure of in your suggestion is VSTi instruments - partly in my own ignorance - if the VSTi is doing all the heavy lifting in creation and performance, it should be hu or even AI, but if I am programming it (e.g. via step input or notation, adding inflections etc.) that might be tantamount to me doing HU.
I look at it like this - that your idea is defining the (forgotten or assumed) other end of a spectrum of credit labelling.

Just thinking..... What say you? Even though I find the idea interesting right now, in a couple of years people won't care any more than they do today whether a drum machine was used or not. I find it interesting that you're listing VST instruments. I record many of my piano parts myself using a VSTi, and the piano VSTi supports me just as much as a real piano. It's just a _little_ less expensive and takes up less real estate than a real Bösendorfer Grand Imperial 290  Edit: Tori Amos plays such a monster during her live gigs. I wonder what kind of insurance she has that covers that...

Just thinking..... What say you? I find it interesting that you're listing VST instruments. I record many of my piano parts myself using a VSTi, and the piano VSTi supports me just as much as a real piano. It's just a _little_ less expensive and takes up less real estate than a real Bösendorfer Grand Imperial 290 Listeners may not care but those who pay royalties most certainly do and scrutiny will increase going forward. AI generated content cannot be copyrighted. The Librarian of Congress based her decision on 150 years of precedent and the governments around the world immediately embraced the concept. This means that nobody gets to own the work product and no monies need be paid. We’re talking about Billion$. Nobody benefits more than Spotify and YouTube at the moment. VIs (virtual instruments) have nothing to do with this. Humans manipulate the software instruments. VSTs are just Steinberg’s tech. A company handling my sync licensing catalog sent me and others it represents a recent letter on its AI policy.
No AI.
As in zero. Loud and clear in plain English.
As in, if you used it for the tracks in your music we don't want it go somewhere else. And if you send us something where you used it and didn't tell us you got to tell us now because we're going to take it down.
I don't think the idea that AI music is the future is necessarily true.
At all.
For hobbyists who want to play their music back to themselves in their living room and enjoy it, I think that is groovy and cool. Have fun.
But I don't think many people are going to sync anything that's done with Suno.
I have no idea how Spotify plans to make money off of music that can't be copyrighted but I don't really care to know because I'm not really interested in their scams or anybody's scams for that matter. It just doesn't matter to me. I'm going to continue to do things the way I've always done it which includes using band in a box for some backing tracks like drums and bass, since real tracks are somewhat equivalent to samples and samples are perfectly legit, and then playing a lot of the rest of the stuff by myself and singing them too.
Maybe I don't have the best voice in the world but at least it's mine.

I have no idea how Spotify plans to make money off of music that can't be copyrighted
… That's easy; same as YouTube: They keep the money and don't pay it out—been going on for over a year now. Of course, they have to discern the differences between AI and the real deal and that's getting harder to do but it's not impossible. The more successful they are separating the wheat from the chaff, the more subscriber and advertising money they get to keep for themselves.

Capitalism at its worst. Multinational and corporate playbook. Rant over. Andrew Yeah, little Johnny Coward locked in long term contracts and we buy back our own gas at market rate. WHY do people still believe that his mob were the better economic managers? Even worse the current mob are getting stick about LJC's failures. Labeling as AI is fine, it appeases a large group of creators, means next to nothing to consumers and allows the ever greedy corps an excuse to hold even more of the revenue generated at almost no cost to them.
