Again using the suggestions made on Kara-Moon's and this forum I remixed this song .

Let me know what you think.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Hi MarioD,

I thought that this mix was very good.
I liked the drums and bass mix.
I thought that the guitar could be moved away slightly from the center, but who am I to speak.
I am just learning how to mix myself and now know how hard it is to get it right every time.
So well done I liked the mix.

Best regards
Michee

Hi Mario,

Impressive work yet again! I don't know how you keep managing to come up with such good quality material so quickly. I'm envious; really envious!

I really like the driving bass and drums. They set an excellent groove. Like michee, I find mixing incredibly difficult so please take my following comments with a grain of salt. My first impression was that the vocal could be lifted a smidgen. This is where I use the "Trim" feature that Sonar Home Studio has. When I get the volume envelopes settled so that the vocal sounds even against the backing throughout the entire mix, I use Trim to raise or lower the vocal and "nestle" it into my mixes. I'd try setting Trim to about +1 to +1.5. That should just add a touch of extra sheen to an already polished sounding vocal. (You've probably already tried this given your considerable expertise. It's just my AUD 2¢ worth )

All the best,
Noel

Hi Mario,

Excellent! I'm just guessing as to what you did, but to my ears it sounds like you dropped an eq and compressor on the final mix. Whatever you did, everything sounds warmer, but the highs and detail is still there. As mentioned above, I think the bass and drums benefited the most, but everything benefited--even the synth.

This is about my eighth or ninth time through this now and I really like this song. It's in my keeper folder. Thanks for sharing.

Jim

I'd be completely happy if I had just one more guitar.

Thanx guys for listening, the very kind reviews and the suggestions.

Michee, you’re right. The guitar should have been moved away from center. You guys have some excellent ears! Thanx for the suggestion.

Noel, good suggestion about using the trim feature in Sonar. I use the output of a compressor to increase the vocal gain. I’ll try the trim feature as that would be easier the using the FX box; sometimes I overlook the obvious!

Jim, actually I changed the EQ and compressor to the free ones Noel suggested in another tread. I’m still on a learning curve with them as with any compressor subtle changes can yield extreme results.

Thanx again for taking the time to listen and comment - MarioD

I'm listening to this through headphones, so some aspects might be distorted.

The remix of the song makes a better impression on me than the initial version, so that's a good thing! Despite what you might think from my comments, I think you've done a great job here.

Most importantly, you've fixed a lot of the problems that were in the vocals of the first mix. They're now stronger an more present than before.

But there are a lot of glitchy points, and I'm not quite sure what's going on. For example, on the word "magic" at 0:27, there's a weird warbling sound. It might be that the vocals are being trampled on by the drums.

Another spot is on "lights" at 0:29. It could be that the track is clipping at that point. The "Now" at 2:00 has the same problem - it looks like clipping to me. The final word of the song, "path" at 2:40 has a volume dropout on it.

One big problem is the bass - it's loud, and often muddy. Pulling the song up in my multitrack shows that the bass goes up to -12db. By comparison, most pop songs I've looked at never bring the bass higher that -24db. EQing it back down makes a big difference, and brings the song out of the mud.

But it seemed to lack... kick. Is there a kick drum in the mix? I can't find it.

The guitars lack punch - they should come in strong at the end, but they're lost in the mix. They're much too weak.

There are a number of "dead" spots in the song where not much happens. For example, at 1:44 there's an instrumental break where... well, not much really happens.

The bass line at 2:44 is too long, and doesn't seem to have a direction. It seems like it misses one of the notes, and it should probably be up an octave (unless you're planning on adding other instruments into the mix). At 2:51, it's busy playing a line that competes with the vocal. Never block the vocal.

The song suffers from what I'll call the "BIAB Syndrome" - it sounds great, but sounds the same throughout. If you listen to your typical song, there's always something changing every couple of bars. The simplest thing to do is to put something different on each verse - strummed acoustic guitar, a shaker, raise out the volume on the hi hat... It doesn't matter, as long as things change.

Once you've gotten through the final verse, the vocal is no longer the lead, and you should bring the other instruments into focus. The guitars are anemic, and the drums are too quiet at this point.

Once you've gotten to the end of the song, you've got what amounts to an extended bass solo. But the first part of the solo isn't really compelling - it just sort of goes through the changes, and we've already heard the bass do that multiple times. The second half gets more interesting. At the end, the synth cuts out, which sounds weird.

I think you could get more creative with your song ending. Cut the "boring" part of the bass solo, and jump from 2:28 to 3:08. Fade instead, which gets rid of the problem with the synth. And add something else to the mix at that point to add some interest - how about slowly bringing in about the sounds of traffic and city crowds as the song fades?

Dcuny, thanx for listening and your comments. I do appreciate them.

I have printed out your message and I will address these issues as soon as I have time, i.e. I have little time for music right now as life is getting in the way!

I like it Mario, very nice . . .

The bass seems like it is clipping here in spots? I've got my levels at 70 % for playback, dunno if its here or was recorded with the distortion/clipping thang . . .

Anyhoo, this one takes us on a journey for sure. I like the sound canvas you have woven here brother.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
