I am about to transfer all of my programs from a Win 10 to a Win 11 computer; this is my music computer so I will be down for awhile. I have read about a program called Zinstall; https://www.zinstall.com/This program is suppose to transfer all data and programs from one computer to another. Of course I am skeptical. So has anyone here had any experience wit Zinstall? Thanx in advance for your time. PS - Life has really gotten in the way of making and listening to music so I apologize if I miss some of your songs.

No, I haven't heard of this, but I haven't been looking recently either.
The menu had an entry for upgrade your computer to Windows 10, so that was disconcerting, but elsewhere it mentioned what you are doing: upgrading from 10 to 11.

By the way, Microsoft extended Windows 10 support an additional year (for security updates), so you can keep using Windows 10 until October 2027. That was good news for my home built Windows 10 tower (which can't be upgraded to 11 because it doesn't have TPM 2.0 and my i7 processor isn't supported by Windows 10). And the component prices are ridiculous right now. A year ago, I bought two 4 TB external Seagate USB hard drives for $99 each. Today that same drive is $180 for just one drive. I've seen memory prices and SSD storage increase 75-90% as well in the past year (because data centers are buying up all the components to support AI, leaving us lowly consumers with significantly higher prices). So I'm happy with the one year Microsoft reprieve, since my tower computer is very capable (32GB RAM, 11 TB 7200 RPM SATA storage, i7 processor).
I'm not familiar with zinstall, but will follow this thread for a potential solution when the time comes.

Hi John,
Yes i did hear about the Win 10 extension but unfortunately my music computer has been giving me problems for a couple of months now. It is another intermittent problem that I can't track down. The last time, about 2 years ago, this kind of problem happened it was in the shop for 3 weeks and it costed me a lot. I figured it was time to bite the bullet and pay those high prices.

First I heard of this software, something I am interested in also as eventually I will be moving from this very old pc, sixteen years to a new pc, though at the moment it runs Biab Cubase and other software just fine, so hopefully it will last to when Microsoft support ends in October 27.
I went to the website of that Zinstall and it offers two versions, the cheaper one (and I think both are quite expensive) will only do a transfer over your internet connection, whereas with the more expensive version will do it from USB external drive with Migration Kit Pro.
With the Ai doing a search, some people like the software whereas others find that on the new pc software doesn't load properly after a transfer.
I hate the hassle of transferring myself to a new pc, but I have to be honest I have collected my many plugins and other stuff over the years that I will never need, so probably if I live long enough to get a new pc I will just build the software up gradually over a few months.
What I would do though and I just did a search and it says CCleaner can do this, is print out a list of all the software and programs that is installed on old pc.

FWIW I have a different approach that has served me well for decades.
Whenever I upgrade my PC, I don’t rely on a utility program to “transfer all my programs” from the old to the new. Rather, I re-install them manually one-by-one.
This buys me three things. First, it ensures that the newly installed programs are the latest and most compatible with my new system. Second, there is zero probability that some 3rd-party utility program will mess things up. And third, in my manual re-install process, most likely I'll identify a piece of software I haven't used in years and most likely never will again. These programs won't get re-installed.
Another bit of housekeeping I do is avoid using any kind of compression software for backing up my user files. Back in the 90’s our company’s policy was to have us engineers use a compression utility which (supposedly) did compress our files but the problem arose when my hard drive died and learned that it couldn’t uncompress the files properly. As a result, I needed to reconstruct megabytes of user files and have never forgotten that lesson. So, I always backup my files in their native (uncompressed) format.
I’m guessing others have their own experiences and processes, but I have found that simple = reliable.

Yes Steve, I have done the same thing in the past. But with over 1TB of sounds and programs, most all of which I use, that will the my last resort. Remember that I have 15 years of programs and data on this old computer. I have already copied and transferred my D and E drives so all that is left is the 2TB C drive with those sounds and programs.
I may try to copy said sounds and data and then install the programs. However I have a lot of programs, for instance all of my Swam stuff and many other exe music programs.

I'm not familiar with zinstall, but will follow this thread for a potential solution when the time comes. A MB upgrade may allow you to keep the rest of the stuff and add TPM2 That's what my last ROG MB did for me .. (ASUS B450M-A II) I no longer get the TPM failure when checking to upgrade.

FYI UPDATE - I bought the program and transferred 1.5 TB using the USB transfer method, I wanted to give it the worst scenario,i.e. the one with the most chance for failure. It took around 9 hours to move stuff from my old computer to an 2TB USB2 drive. It took over 14 hours from USBc toaster to my new computer; I don't know exactly how long it took as I went to bed! It successfully transfer all but three programs, Malwarebytes, cCleaner, and 7 Zip. I knew that Malwarebytes and cCleaner would not copy. The docs said stop everything running in the background, even your antivirus. So for both computers I activated Zinstall then immediately disabled my Ethernet card and stopped my antivirus. I am currently in the process of deactivating programs from my old computer and activating them on my new computer, a real slow and PITA process. Plus some have updates, another PITA. I don't know why others have had problems but my guess is that they didn't follow the docs to a tee. I think following the docs is the key to a successful transfer. I was gonna say just my two cents but since they are stopping making pennies I guess opinion now is worth nothing

I don't know why others have had problems but my guess is that they didn't follow the docs to a tee. Some people seem to think reading the manual is a sign of weakness. Clearly we're not among them.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.
