Myself and a jam buddy are trying to work out how to get a realtrack to play an instrument solo in a chorus or a part of a song of our choosing.
We are struggling with what numbers to put in the settings window of the partial track generation to get this to happen and we are not finding help useful. We can get it to work sometimes but its operation seems inconsistent to us and very confusing.
Do any guides exist on how to do this or can anyone help with the logic.

The way I do this is move one of the RealTracks tracks to a Utility track. Then I have a track free to work with the solo. Then use F5 bar settings to Mute or Back to Normal the solo as needed. Freeze the other tracks. Then use partial track regeneration on the solo track until you like it.

this stuff is a doddle in realband the companion to bb.
give rb a test and see if it meets your needs.
(rb has 256 traks...)
bb is great for fast genning of traks but rb is better for dealing with audio/midi details......ie many advanced features.
please read the manual because rb is choc full of features.
if you go to pg tips forum ive posted many tips you might find usefull.
(i really miss those knickerbocker glories...lol....i support Hull City !!)

Steve Matt, OK I've sussed out most of it BUT confused by the need to regen the solo track at the end.....why is that needed if it stops/starts when required?

Hellow Steve, Matt pointed out the best path here. But if I understand your original question, perhaps I can clarify,? First don't go out of BIAB for what you are trying to do. Using F5 (Bar Settings ) followed by Ctnl F8 (Partial Regeneration) is actually a routine function in BIAB that works well. F5 assigns where a specific RT will play in your arrangement. If you want the Horn to play only at the chorus use F5 to have it play from a specific bar to a specific bar. It will auto mute where you don't want it to play. Ctrl + F8 assignes what a specific RT will play in an arrangement. It performs a partial track regeneration on just a highlighted section. Now that you have the horn playing only from Bar x to Bar xx, you may want to change what the horn is playing for a better fit. Instead of regenerating the entire instrument track for the whole song go to tracks view and highlight just the portion of the horn you want to change and then use Ctrl F8. It will regenerate only that selected portion. Nothing else. When you hear what you like, you are done. This simple combination of F5 followed by Ctrl F8 is one of the best RT workflows in all of BIAB!

Dan just summarized the answer. When you hear what you like, you can stop regenerating the solo. The point of regenerating just one track at a time is the speed to get to that point.

Steve's issue is closely linked to another thread discussion about BIAB's Upper Level generative audio concept. It's not new, it's another area of BIAB not commonly used by the forum. A method I really like is one PG Music developers use in this situation in many of the BIAB demos. They select RT #1152-Silence first and alternate between it and any other selected RealTrack.
They replace RT#1152 with the Soloist RT chosen for the solo at the bar the solo is to begin. In the bar following the solo outro, replace the Soloist RT with RT#1152 again. This can be repeated anywhere in the chord chart for fills, a second solo and so forth.
PG Music developers have described this as a better option than using the mute command because Mute-Back to normal can result in abrupt, awkward intro's and endings. Sometimes a phrase is cutoff midway through the phrase itself. Using F5/Mute-Back to normal command is applied after the BIAB algorithm has selected audio for a track.
Using RT1152 prompts the BIAB to select different audio for intros and endings and is applied to the audio track as the BIAB algorithm selects audio for the track so the intros and endings are anticipated and audio selected is adjusted to reflect their occurrence throughout the song.
To recap:
1) Open mixer Rt. Click any of the legacy tracks (B/P/G/S/M/S)- Select RT#1152 to insert onto the selected track.
2) At any bar you want the Soloist instrument to play, open Bar Settings, Select RealTrack Button and insert the Soloist instrument
3) Repeat this to use RT#1152-Silence to mute and unmute so the Soloist RT plays only when you want it to.
Four years later, this same technique brings us right back to the question in this thread.
Matt and Dan have shown how to accomplish the OP's objective using F5 and Partial Regeneration. That works. But there's another way to approach the same problem — rather than manipulating the generated result, communicate a different instruction to the generator.
RT #1152 changes the generative resource assigned to that region. It's not merely editing a RealTrack after it's generated; It changes the instruction supplied to the generative system, BIAB's internal algorithm.
RT #1152 gets particularly interesting when inserted into the Mixer Track: Silence isn't “doing nothing.” Silence is a RealTrack. Just as guitar, piano, bass, drums, or any other RealTrack performs, RT#1152 performs silence for that audio region.
So instead of telling BIAB, “generate this, then mute it here,” we're telling the generative system what resource to use while it generates the song.
That's the distinction I've been calling the Upper Level. One historical note that may be worth revisiting here: years ago, when PG Music staff explained why RT #1152 was preferred over Mute/Back to Normal, the terminology they used was “smooth transitions.”
At the time, RealTracks had a much more limited quantity and specificity of recorded source material, and abrupt endings and transitions were a common consequence. RT-1152 provided BIAB with an explicit musical instruction that allowed it to handle those transitions more smoothly.
Try using RT #1152 and see what happens when, instead of manipulating what BIAB generated, you give the generator instructions.

Edit Ah yes I see now there is a silence Realtrack in the RT list.......

That's great. I hope you experiment with it a bit. It's not as complicated as it reads when written out.
The only difference is to select the RealTracks button rather than a track from the list. The RT Button will give you a list of the 24 tracks. In the search RT bar, type 1152 and that will isolate and show the RT-1152 Silence RealTrack.
When you want the silence to end, repeat the process from the RealTracks Button submenu and type in the RealTrack that the silence replaced. For example, typing 806 brings up RT 802, Strummed 12-String Acoustic Guitar playing a Folk-Rock Waltz.
The interesting part is what you're actually doing here: you're giving the RealTrack engine an arrangement instruction before it creates the track arrangement, rather than generating the performance and then manipulating the result.
This is a simple example of what I've been calling the Upper Level. Try it and see what happens.
Hopefully, after you experiment, you'll have more questions. RT-1152 is just a foot in the door to the Upper Level.

Why can I not insert a track into "Chorus 1" by using the realtrack button in the bar settings window? The method works perfectly for any other chorus but NOT chorus 1.......I'm confused

I did a quick check and it appears to work here. Take a close look in this Song Memo feature which summarizes all/any changes you make in F5. I have added a track to chorus 1 using the realtracks button within the bar settings window. I've checked with the above method and yes the track is shown BUT it does not play the selected track in Chorus 1 if you play the song......

OK, let me try again, I believe you may have fallen into a rabbet hole with a very old complaint by users.
I just checked and the change works exactly as it should for Chrous 1 and Chorus 2... But here is the kicker. While the RT does change to play as required, the label in the Mixer does not change! It never has and never will! You can verify this. Your change in the RT is apparently too subtle for you to confirm by ear. So make a drastic change in Chorus 1 (slide gutar versus a strumming guitar). You will hear the change and if you look at the Tracks view, you will see the change. But the RT label does not change.

My label does change for chorus 2 but not for chorus 1.
I have inserted an alto sax track into chorus 1 but it does not play when I play the song.....

You're killin me here.... Two strikes, one more and I'm out. I am testing with current BIAB and you have 2025. Maybe that the issue? Will have to wait to see what others report. To tell the truth I never use this workflow to change a RT. Once I put a RT on a specific track, I leave it there. If I need another RT to step forward, I put it on a Utility Track and then use F5 only to mute and start the different tracks. But what you are reporting is consistent with the understanding that BIAB provides multiple workflows to accomplish the same thing. But as we see, not all of them work well. Good luck.

Yeh killin me too..... We didn't use this method either until it was suggested. Just can't understand why it doesn't play the track on chorus 1. Anyway we'll revert back to our previous method and your method detailed above. I am finding quite a few inconsistences with this software the more I use it

Check if you have an audio file with the same file name in the same folder as your BIAB song. If you have previously exported the audio, it can play that instead. Just a thought.
