here is a song that MarioD rescued for me. absolutely amazeing production work considering what he had to work with. it was done rough in a studio (free time...nice people). i gave mario just the stereo digitised version of the song done on tape. just my vocs and guitars complete with tape drift. one takes in the studio etc etc....used all junk gear laying around in the studio...but...hey whaddya want for free...lol. the song was meant to be a 'i just wanna get this sucker down fast before i lose the idea'...sorta deal....but people kept on at me to 'tart it up'. they like the 'vibe'. the song bugs me...lol...tried to redo it in big studio...people said it lost the vibe... heres the link...if anyone hates it...apologies....blame me. use good earbuds....feel free to comment any way you want. my hat goes off to Mario. https://soundcloud.com/alfsongs/high-tech-man-v3-c-alfsongsom

Hi om! I like it! It’s got a 60s party vibe to it - which I like. It’s missing a little low end, but based on your description of its recording evolution, it sounds like Mario has worked wonders to get it to this level. Very generous Mario - that’s what a good community is about! Andrew

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. but the credit goes to Mario for rescuing this song.
heres the situation that i'm sure many songwriters get into. ie...often one wants to forget about all the gear and just get the darn idea for the song down 'fast'. i'm not the most patient of people...lol.
i have many like this song whereby at the time one thinks to oneself 'dunno if anybody will like this but what the hey...its bugging me and cant stop thinking about it... and i think there is a hook there and anyway i like it even though it might never see the light of day'. as i was working in hi tech i thought 'how about a sly jab about the dangers of hi tech'. at the time i was getting free studio time, the use of two inch tape that had already been used...so it was great for getting ideas down fast. i just couldnt afford the studio costs due to various life costs out of my control....which i had to step up to the plate and address at the time....so used tape/free time/junk gear laying around it was...lol.
let me say Marios production beats any other version that i tried for. and every credit to him for keeping 'the vibe' of the song which people told me they preferred to a fancy shmancy re-do etc etc.
its not there now with AI as far as i know...but...in the future i suspect one will input into AI a rough song, then tell AI what needs to be done and out pops a better version while keeping 'the vibe'.
once again thanks for the comments and huge kudos to Mario for rescuing the song.
happiness to all.
om

I like it, it sounds good! So what exactly did Mario do? Might help many of us rescue our own songs.

Jeff First of all om is extremely generous with praise; I l really didn't do that much. om sent me a wav and a couple of MIDI tracks. I separated the wav into two stems, one vocal and the other the guitars. I slightly modified MIDI and used my sound sources and effects, i.e. the bass and B3 organ. I selected and slightly modified various GrooveMonkee MIDI drum loops and used a SSD-5 drum kit. I added a touch of reverb and did the mixing.

I separated the wav into two stems, one vocal and the other the guitars. Hi Mario! Good work, and thanks for the workflow description. What do you use for your stem splitting? I have an older recorded song but don’t have access to my stem recordings, so I might try my hand at splitting to see what I can resurrect - I can’t be bothered re-recording - life is too short! Andrew Andrew, I used my DAW, Fender Studio One Pro 8. If you can't find a stem splitter you like I could try to split the track for you. I don't really use stem splitting so I don't know how my DAW stacks up with other stem splitters.

All.
i guess i should explain why i'm so happy re Mario's work on high tech man. this song has always bugged me...lol. i tried doing re-dos several times with big fancy big studio gear,.... great musos....but there was always 'something' missing. a senior big studio audio engineer once said to me when i turned to him in frustration... 'sometimes its just not possible to re-create something...'. i didnt listen to him cos i'm stubborn and thought i knew better...lol. then the re-dos drove me nuts cos he was right. lesson learnt.
similarly (and maybe this might be of interest to lurkers looking to set up a project studio for the first time...). there was a canadian band that did a demo once in eastern canada... if i remember a smaller studio...not a big name ? then their record company decided a new production was needed of the song. but decided to issue the original production which went on to do very well.
there are many many examples of the above where the re-do was eclipsed by the vibe of the original recording warts and all in the music biz. some successful songs even had obvious mistakes...but they still did well. it would be interesting to explore how the human mind relates to some songs but not others. for example why....after playing along with them a ton of times.... can i still play along with a certain rock song but not others ?
in summary i would encourage anyone to explore maybe updating an old song of theirs.
bottom line Mario has made me very very happy...particularly as i was going nuts going thru rehab as a result of minor surgery a few months back.... and thought the song would never see the light of day as i heard it in my mind. given the above i encourage you Andrew or anyone to revisit their songs.
happiness to all.

re SMpro.
i only had a little time so far to test...due to other things going on..but it looks like a nice piece of software....but...for me with other family responsibilities outside my budget right now.....you wanna see my utility bills...crazy...lol. it DID interpret chords well and will test it out further when i have time.
happiness.

A good collab, well done. As for stem splitting I use FSP and SMpro, both work fine for my needs.

There's a term one hears sometimes in the theatre and in music: "over-rehearsed".
There's a good argument for the "practice until you can't get it wrong", but there's also a case for the immediacy and jeopardy of being on the edge.
Sometimes there's just no substitute for the latter.

Gordon.
as always you speak the truth. some songs versions one slaves away on spending hours of work often lose to the 'lets just get it down' one take approach...sometimes people just prefer the 'took 5 minutes' method... this song used total junk... junk 2 inch multitrack tape normally used by people for practice many times and junk gear...i think the junk amp used on this was an old beaten up practice amp...probably cost 80 quid...lol.
happines to you and yours. some day i'll get back to blighty for a visit. you live in what we used to call 'the toffs county'...lol. lovely place....some of my relations once came from there in days of yore....great fish n chips and knickerbocker glories if i remember.

as always you speak the truth. My statement was mostly my opinion. Not everyone will agree. you live in what we used to call 'the toffs county'...lol. Some bits; Other bits much less so.

[quote=justanoldmuso] as always you speak the truth. My statement was mostly my opinion. Not everyone will agree. ............................... I agree. I'll take a first take with a couple of small warts over and a track that was polished so much that it becomes dull. Feeling is more important to me. YMMV
