I admit instrumentals often get me drifting into lyric ideas... the changes in yours kybosh that tendency and kept me alert. This is one I`d have to employ the chord mapper to get what`s going on, especially bits I like and might "borrow"!
The melodic guitar keeps it together; the drums a little heavy for my taste.

Changing of the modes is a good way to change the mood of the song; Ionian (major) is "happy", Phrygian is "dark", Mixylodian is "happy, but serious". Enjoyed how your song took advantage of these mood swings by changing the mode. The ending on Idim (Locrian) definitely gives a bit of unnerving feel and I think makes the song more memorable not resolving on the familiar major chord (from Ionian or Mixylodian)or minor chord (from Phrygian.) Enjoyed the listen and chance to use my music theory while listening.

Tangmo,

Musically this is very clever.

Intuitive, classy, surprising with anticipation and tension.

You've really have done justice to your song.

You've created a nice one here...
That's the neat thing about music...

Howdy, 'tangmo'...

I dig musical 'experiments', 'cause I regard the experimenters as questing souls who are not only trying to expand the boundaries of their theoretical musical knowledge, but also are following a path that their spirit is leading them on. As I've said on the Users' forum before, "music is more than sounds".

But as sounds go, your piece reminds me of the modal approach that the late film music composer, Fred Myrow, applied to his score for the 1972 sci-fi film, Soylent Green. His music for that movie has the same 'shape-shifting' feel that On Third Thought has: chordally restless, always seeking a higher musical ground, finding consonance in dissonance, and more.

I think On Third Thought is a novel, quietly other-wordly musical journey that also evokes some finely-felt emotions of the sublime kind. It could've gone on forever, as far as I'm concerned.

LOREN (a.k.a. 'bluage')

P.S. The 'jammy' thing -- you did not desire it to be such??? I think it provides a rhythmic base that sort of grounds and connects the modal flights of musical fancy you unleashed in your composition.

"Music is what feelings sound like."-- borrowed from a Cakewalk Music Creator forum member, "Mamabear".

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
