Yes, the PD is a treasure trove. I'm not promoting web sites, but
when I found the nice folks at pdinfo dot com I was able to order
for a couple of dollars original reprints of the sheet music pre 1920.
In case of question, it helps to have "the sheet music that was
worked from" on hand.
That said, some of my favorite artists who made extensive use of PD have been Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and The Grateful Dead. What do they have in common? Each will take an old song and work with it until it sounds new.
Obviously, talents of Willie and Jerry are rare, but I am thinking of a song like "Casy Jones" or "Roll Away the Dew," the same but different.
Come to think about it, the great era of Blues is coming on to the PD.
