Who was that masked double-bass playing dude? He plays some awesome licks. I wonder whether his part was entirely written out, or if they gave him his head. I can't think how to research it; imdb.com only gives the composer, not the players.

Lalo Schifrin penned the underscore. Carol Kaye played the bass for the session. Lookout, Gramma wants to sit in, guys... http://www.carolkaye.com/www/library/tvandfilms.htm Carol is actually a jazz guitarist. She played every one of her many famous Bass sessions using a P-Bass and a guitar pick. She actually did subs for the great James Jamerson after Motown moved to the West Coast and, still using that pick, turned in some performances that people are still arguing over today, swearing up and down that it was indeed "St. James" on the session and not "some girl using a pick". I already had tremendous respect for the lady, but that kicks it up a coupla notches. It never would have occurred to me that it was she was on upright. I was thinking Ray Brown, Ron Carter, or someone I'd never heard of.
I hardly recommend the flick--it's comic book stuff--but man, those chops!

If it is upright acoustic bass, maybe that part was played by someone else.
You've got the link to Carole Kaye's website, she responds to questions on her forum there, or at least she was doing so awhile back, worth a shot, why not ask her?

TapeOp had a great interview with Carol Kaye many years ago. I think she said in that interview that she often played with a felt pick. Then again, it could have been that she used a felt damper on the strings - I can't recall with certainty.

Guitar pick, rather small looking for Bass work, and she did indeed add more felt to the Fender P-Bass stock damper sponge that comes under the old "ashtray" cover as well. Interesting because of the sound she was able to achieve when most other Fenderbass players were *removing* the stock sponge damper and "ashtray" cover altogether.
Her amp for all of those sessions was a box stock Fender Bassman amp, as well, no mods. But that is more an indicator of what can be done in a studio with mic techniques, etc. than anything else. After all, James Jamerson used one of those little Ampeg bass amps where the tube chassis flipped out of the top of the single 15" speaker housing. The old Ampeg "R2D2" as I like to call 'em.

Did you ever hear Lalo's album ( The Dissection and Reconstruction of Music From the Past as Performed By the Inmates of Lalo Schifrin's Demented Ensemble as a Tribute to the Memory of the Marquis De Sade ) ? What a title !

I had the good fortune to study electric bass with Carol in 1984 when she lived in Denver for a while. So much to learn, so little time. She recorded each lesson on a tape cassette, and I still have them. I’m pretty sure that most of what she was trying to teach me wasn’t sinking in at the time.
One of her preferred techniques was to keep time by tapping the left foot (as opposed to the more intuitive right foot), and she was mighty adamant about it. I don’t remember why, but I wasn’t about to contradict her.
Likewise, she felt strongly about the use of a pick (as Mac described). She believed that the pick lent itself to a better attack on the notes.
On several occasions, she subbed for me with a group I was working with at the time. Good thing she moved back to the West Coast or I’d have been aced out of a gig for sure.
A truly remarkable lady, and an incredible musician.
Jon

Seems the message got through after all. This was the reply: "I hardly know what I've done, and don't know what others have done, can't help you sorry."

. . . So I went to the source. I've got a message out to Lalo Schifrin, the composer of the MF score.

OMG. I've been listening to this guy for decades and didn't know it. His discography is amazing. I'm gonna have to look up some sides and listen again, only this time knowing what I'm listening to.
