Hi Folks.
Its been a long time since Ive posted here.
I have been recording witha simple computer mic,which has worked well for me for the simple stuff Ive been doing.
i want to get into some more serious quality recording and would like to know what i need in terms of a USB interface to use better mic's.
For computer sound I have the MS Gs wavetable, Ive installed the Roland,VSC,DXi,and have microsoft midi mapper. Pretty basic ,I know. But it works well for now.
I need a recommendation for an interface that will work well with this , and if I need anything additional to make it all work.
I am not in need of the ability to record multi tracks at a time. I just want to use better mics,and possibly better sound quality, and achieve it as simply and uncomplicated as possible.
Anyone have some suggestions.Any help will be gratefully accepted.

You have any gazillion options, what is your price range? Do you plan on recording more than two tracks at any given time? here is a pile of them between $100 and $200 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/nav...100001+344253+8

A good mic and pre-amp will do wonders for quality. I currently use a Shure KSM27 & Presonus Tube-Pre. The Tube-Pre allows a very clean capture and also adds a little "warmth" to the vox.

Thanks for the replies . My biggest concern is compatability.Seems a lot of these interface options come with some kind of recording software, which leads one to believe they would work well together. From what Ive been reading it looks like I should be able to use whatever recording program I want with most of the optionds available. Im seriously considering a Lexicom Lambda which hopefully will work well with PT11

The Lambda may be problematic, some here have had issues with it. Version 11 would likely be prone to these issues. Do a search on the forums to find out more.
I'd suggest trying either a nice mic preamp, or a mixer with mic pre's built into it (they all have this) and use the line in on the computer. What is current soundcard anyway?
This would help a lot with suggestions. A decent mic/preamp combination will likely make the biggest difference at this point, and may work well enough with your existing interface. Depends on what soundcard you have to work with right now.
My basic suggestion to new recording guys; an SM57 and a Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp. You can get a LOT done with that.. The SM57 will work with anything from voice to drums, and the VTB-1 is a great deal for a quality preamp.
As you expand the VTB-1 will work nicely with higher priced mics too, but the SM57 is a battle-proven workhorse.

rharv is giving great advice here.
that VTB-1 mic preamp also features a true high impedence 1/4" instrument input that properly accomodates direct injected guitars.
Two VTB-1's plus one or two SM57 mics can be a formidable setup, an input for each of the two input channels L and R of your soundcard. With guitar pickup or guitar mic'd plugged into one and the other one for your vocal mic, you could record guitar and vocal simultaneously very nicely indeed.

This option sounds good for working with PT with out the potential problems mentioned in regards to the Lambda. My concern is that I dont have a sound card such as "Sound Blaster" etc. as I mentioned initially my computer has the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth . I dont know how that factors in to the equation. I dont know if I have the ability to plug in the pre amp(s) to the synth.Ill have to take a look. I know I have the option for a "rear" mic indicated on my audio options window. Would that be the sound care location?

Hey Folks.
After all Ive read here on the Forum I thought it over and my solution was to get an Audio Technica
2020 USBmic . If I went for an interface I still would need a better mic. So in whats left of my mind I thought this was my best option for what I have and need.
It basicly installed itself on my computer once I plugged in the USB chord,and I was prompted that it was installed and ready to go. Virtually painless. I have tried it out and it works great.
Im just getting started with it here so if I have any unforseen problems,or issues ill let you know.
This seems like a viable solution for folks in my situation.

May I barge in here with a related question?
I am tempted to order a VTB-1 as suggested, but I may not need it. I am working through a Mackie 1202 mixer (with four mono mic inputs and phantom power), using a Rhode NT-1 Condenser and a Shure 57 or an AKG mic.
The mixer has preamps in it, probably not as nice as the VTB-1, but I guess the question is, how much better would an outboard preamp be? Could these old ears tell the difference?

The Mackie VLZ preamps are pretty nice, Brad.
The difference in the VTB-1 would be the vacuum tube warmth that can be dialed in. VTB-1 dialed over to Solid State side only is about as transparent as the Mackie VLZ preamps are, I've run both and either. You should be good to go with what you've got, when it comes time for mic preamp you likely should consider something that costs a bit more and delivers more than the VTB does, because you have some pretty decent pres in that Mackie already. They just don't offer any coloration, which is an arguable asset.

Many thanks, Mac, for saving me 140 bucks -- and my desktop thanks you as well, for saving it from further clutter.
I imagine, between BB/RB and Sonar 8, that I have enough ways to get "coloration," -- i.e. methods of camouflaging the awfulness of my voice.
