I had to buy a new standby DVD player today. I don't normally read the instructions unless I get stuck but if I did have a problem I would not have got far with 'THIS' manual and I quote:-

"The Intellingence Software edcalates

1. Place into the promotion disc. The DVD machine could promote when it is playing.
2. During escalating, the TV screen demonstrates the promotion course.
3. The successful queen of promotion, the pallet automation are out of warehouse.
4. May enter promotion then by storing software in USB, and the push down the "DVD/USB" key to exchange for USB to enter promotion. NB:During the promotion, please do not cut off the power."

"Kodak Picture
Are you regret of one photo taken in childhood being old and are you regret of one precious photo was lost? And now, you are not in trouble of it. This machine has the strong functions of e-album. It may clone the photo into the disk turning in your corners. Then you may enjoy your life without any trouble back at the damage and loss of any photo."

I didn't change the spelling or anything else as I typed these in! I can't even guess what they are trying to say.

I don't know why the Chinese/Taiwanese/Korean manufacturers don't employ an English speaking person to write their manuals - it doesn't have to cost them that much!

They could probably hire a dozen of their own workers for the cost of one English-speaking one <grin>.

Thanks for sharing!

There was once a time when Japanese manuals, to include Service Manuals, suffered from the same sort of problem.

Such was sorted out by somewhere around the 80's and the Japanese manuals became actually a bit better than the manuals from some of the US manufacturers.

I fully expect manuals from other nations such as China to follow suit as their market gets driven by more and more English speaking nations - and other languages as well.

I am fairly sure the good folks over in China get a few good chuckles when we try to translate to Chinese

I think a lot of the time these non-English speaking nations 'pour' their manuals into a babelfish translator and are non the wiser on how the translation went - it is left up to the end user to 'sort it out'.

Mac, you are right - some of the synthesizer manuals were very good reads as well as performing the obvious function of a reference.

Without Dr John Chowning's input and booklets for Yamaha for the veritable DX7 synthesizer most of us who owned one would still be in the dark regarding programming them. Even with his manuals it wasn't easy!

In the case of the older Japanese manuals, it was discovered that the problem in that case turned out to be that the Japanese engineers and ceo's had no way of knowing what their translators were doing, this due to not knowing BOTH languages as a native might. There were also great CULTURAL differences noted. For instance, it might truly be the case that one cultural group views what we would call "Installation Disk" as being the "Promotion Disk".

If a problem is out of sight, it may be out of mind.

Translating an old English philosophical such as, "Out of sight, out of mind" from English to the Chinese once returned the result of, "The invisible idiot".

I remember the Japanese manual thing from my first motorcycle, a demon-possessed Honda 250. "Please to take the 10 mm T-handle spanner to the dynamo securing nut," etc., etc.

You really have to speak another language--not necessarily the same target language--to translate properly. The true test, of course, is that when you translate it back into the original the meaning is intact. With the benefit of a BA in Slavic Languages and more than passing familiarity with the Romance languages, I am confident translating from English into Spanish, French, and German, but I always double check on the back end. Literal meanings usually are not sufficient.

Another goody in the vein which Mac cited was translating the phrase "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak" into Russian, which reportedly came back as "the vodka is good, but the steak is lousy." Those were supposed to be computerized translations. Rumor has it that an actual translator was working with Pepsi's slogan "Come alive with the Pepsi generation." Apparently it was rendered in Chinese as "Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead." cool

Having lived through my motorcycle era enjoying quite a few different bike offerings along the way, I gotta say that I found it far easier to work with the Japanese bike manuals, typos, mistranslations and all, than when I first encountered the British manuals for the Triumphs and BSA's.

"What the #&@! is 'tickover'?" (It meant, "idle" as in engine rpm..."

"Whitworth Spanner?" Who in $#%! is Whitworth and what the #*!@ is a Spanner?" (Turned out that Spanner = Wrench and Whitworth meant an entirely different bolthead pattern.)

"Hooter" was a tad easier, but there was also a drawing of what we call the "Horn" along with that paragraph.

The description about how to ride the things and shift gears using clutch with throttle were also rather incomprehensible to this Yankee as well.

But the bikes were cool.

I've never ridden another straight up configuration machine that handled as well as that old late 60's Triumph Tiger. Well, the original Yamaha 650, but it was just a Japanese clone of the Triumph Bonneville platform in most important frame and engine geometry aspects.

I remember my Spanish teacher giving a lesson on what not to say in Spanish, unless you wanted to start a fight. "Su madre" comes to mind.

Thanks Kevin

A few years ago we bought a flat packed bedroom unit. ( Cabinet )
The instructions were a mixture of Spanish / English. It was hilarious trying to understand what they meant. It was simple enough to put together apart from a couple of screw holes being in the wrong place.

Hi Mac. They were indeed, even if we all had to have a box of Whitworth spanners to adjust the tick-over!

My 1956 BSA Gold Star handled like a dream, except that no one would ride behind me in case they skidded on the oil it was dropping. In fact, it was said of British bikes that it they weren't dripping oil, then they must have run out.

Happy days.

I about ran off the road one day for laughing so hard. I was behind an MG Saloon that had the following two bumper stickers on. (Guess I should put them in Lloyd's thread, too.) Insiders will get them all. cool

"The reason the English drink warm beer is because their refrigerators are made by Lucas."

"The parts falling off of this vehicle are of the finest British design and manufacture."

When I got to work I mentioned them to a friend, who pulled out a sheet touting the new and improved Lucas headlight switch, with three settings: Dim, flicker, and off. grin

For total restoration, you need to obtain Lucas Smoke.

Put the Luca Smoke back in and enjoy your vehicle's Lucas Electrics as they were originally intended to be.

http://www3.telus.net/bc_triumph_registry/smoke.htm

Accept only the original, no knockoffs.

That's right! I forgot that the things won't work if you let the smoke out. And only Lucas Smoke will do. (Sold in Imperial quarts and gallons.) cool
