In relation to your last point about importing audio, if you use the "Import" option found under "Audio" on the very top menu, you can off-set the import.



Simply use a negative setting in the 'Bar' box (i.e. the left-most box). For example: instead of the 1, 1, 0 shown above, try -2, 1, 0; this says load the audio in bar -2 and begin on beat 1, tick 0.
