OK, it ran all night, and didn't fix the errors. It had a time out message. That repeated this morning, so I don't think the $30 I spent on a repair program was a good expenditure. It was worth the try though.

So now I'm thinking about one of those old-new stock 160G iPods on Amazon.

Paying 700 for the Sony just seems like a lot of money to play low-fi tunes in the car.
