I'm running into vsti issues after installing new usb drive version of RB. For the 2010 version, I had been using some vsti instruments (specifically Sampletank and Jamstix) with much success. When I originally installed these vsti's, I stored most of the vsti sample files etc. to the same usb drive that RB/BIAB were on, but did allow the .dll files to be installed to my internal "C:" drive under the commonly used C:/Program Files/Steinberg/VSTPlugins.

When I received BIAB 2011 on the new usb drive, I copied all of the vsti folders and files from the 2010 drive over to the 2011 drive. But When I run RB 2011 and open a song that used any of these vsti's, RB cannot pull the setup off the 2011 drive. In fact they're not even seeing the vsti instrument. They will not play properly from 2011 unless I also have the 2010 drive plugged into another usb slot. Obviously there seems to be something on the 2010 drive that the songs need to access in order to set up the vsti properly in each song. I thought maybe I had to run the vsti's install program once again from the 2011 drive, but I tried that with no better results. Can't seem to get my head around this one. Anyone else have this problem?

I suppose in retrospect it would have been better to install the vsti's to my internal drive. But even then, how would one deal with this situation if and when it is time to replace one's computer?

I use Sampletank all the time and it works great with 2011, but i have it installed on an internal drive, and all i did was install 2011 over 2010 on that same drive, so all the VSTis stayed intact and available. I have used RB and BiaB from the USB in the past but the Plugins were still on the "D" drive in the system. As far as jamstix, it plays well as long as you use it as a static drum machine. Rb has always had an issue with any Plug that wants a timing lock on it. I have not used JS for a while due to this issue, and issue I deepluy wish they would address in the next update.

All that said, my experience is that you can not move Sampletank from one system or drive to another unless you reinstall and give it a fresh authorization code. The same is true with Amplitude also from the same folks. Jamstix may be the same way from what i remember. So if you moved it to the new drive i would suspect that you need to run a full install and re-registration.

I suggest that you always install your plugs to the main drive so as the years go by you can add upgrade to the host and not effect the plugin registrations.

Yes, in retrospect installing vsti's to the internal drive is probably the best way to go. When I have both the 2010 (drive F:) and 2011 (drive G:) BIAB usb drives plugged in and I run RB from the 2011 drive G:, any loaded song seems to search for the 2010 drive F: and correctly "picks up" the proper vsti and vsti sound that correspond to each different song track and midi channel. This must mean then that each song stores data per track as to where (what drive) to go to for that specific vsti, as well as any custom configuration you may have done in the vsti to alter that particular sound? Does that sound right? If so, then I wonder if there is any way to "point" an individual song or RB itself at a different drive to pick this up.

If not, then I would suspect that even if you originally install the vsti's to an internal drive, you could potentially run into this same issue when you get a new computer - unless you were very careful to re-install the vsti's to the same internal drive "letter" you used on your previous computer (if you were using multiple partitions).

VST's & VSTi's do not "install" to Windows like DX stuff, meaning there typically is no need for a separate Installer app, nor for it to write to the Registry.

They are simply .DLL files that are placed somewnere on the computer, in the same location, and the host program is directed to find them in that location.

You likely need to visit the VST settings inside RB and tell where your DLLs are stored.

I'll dig around some more in RB then and see if I can work that angle. Thanks for the insight Mac.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
