Hi. I'm trying to insert two Real solos into the same song. At bar 29, I have a B section for 8 bars in which I want a harmonica solo, and at bar 37 I have an A section for 12 bars in which I want an alto sax solo. If I put one in, then the other one gets erased, even if I unclick the "Overwrite Existing Solo in Range" box. I have also tried to "Change Instrument Every Part Marker" but this only allows me to select a single instrument anyways ( I suspect that this is a Midi-only feature).

Can it be done? Can I have two adjacent Real Solos in my song?

Thanks

John

Each RT has to be on a separate part - i.e. piano, strings, soloist, etc. You then use Bar Settings (F5) to mute/unmute the parts where desired.

In you example, assign the harmonica to the Strings part and the sax to the Soloist part. Then use Bar Settings as described above. The Strings and Soloists I used as examples. You can use any of the parts for the task.

If you don't have enough free parts, there are ways around it. Let us know if you need this more complex solution.

Thank you Rachael. How do I assign the harmonica real track solo to the Strings part? When I try to move the soloist track, the only options BIAB gives are to copy to the Melody and Soloist tracks. How are you suggesting that I assign tracks?

Thanks

Right click on the Strings part at the top of the screen and Add/Remove RealTracks...

That will get you to the RT dialog where you can pick what you want

John,
All you do is select the Strings from the top buttons and a drop down will appear from which you simply "asssign RT's ". This is the way you place a RT on any of the instrument parts.

Thank you Rachael and JazzMandan.

Ok now I'm feeling really dumb.

I right click on strings and I select Soloist under "assign to this track". Now what. If I then "Generate Track" I don't get the Soloist part on the Strings track. If I select the instrument from the list, I still don't get the track.

Is this supposed to generate a new solo? Set it up so that the next solo gets put on the strings track? Something else?

Regardless, I am not getting the soloist part on the strings track.

I really appreciate your taking the time to hand-hold me through what I expect is pretty simple.

What Rachael and JazzMandan describe should work though I'll admit I've never tried it.

What I've done for a couple of songs where I had two solos was to generate one, drag it into my DAW/Sequencer. Then generate the second and drag it over.

I'm not sure what is going on. Perhaps the string part is disabled. Try this...

In your song, press the RealTracks button (the Sax icon) and choose the RealTrack Picker Dialog. This will take you to the Assign RealTrack screen. In the top left of the screen is a way to assign RTs to a particular part. It says Assign RT to this track. Pick the track you want and then choose the RT. You can do this for other tracks at the same time. After you are done, close the window. The parts you assigned should turn green. When you press Play, the RTs will generate.

In the BIAB manual, see page 195.

OK Rachael, I think I misunderstood you. I am not assigning the soloist part to the strings, I am simply having BIAB generate an instrument (say, the harmonica) over the entire strings track, then editing out the bits I don't want. Is that it?

I had misunderstood the directions as suggesting that I was copying the soloist track to an empty track.

Thank you once again, Rachael and jazzmandan.

FirstBassman: I think that I will do as you suggest.

Cheers

John

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
