Hi All - computer house-cleaning is rearing its ugly head.
I have 2 PG external drives - an UltraPak from 2011 or 11.5 and an Everything Pak for 2012.

What has me curious is why does the older HD with fewer RTs have a larger "footprint" on the HD, than does the Everything HD which has more RTs but takes up less space. Did I mis-install something? No evidence yet. I just decided to use the newer drive for RTs and RDs, and C Drive for BIAB.

Did I miss something? Has PG further compressed all of the RTs?
I'd like to clean house of duplicate RTs and free some space.

All clues welcome - Ian

Interesting question, Ian. How much of a space difference is there?

I'm not aware of any claim of further compression with 2012. Version 2011 was the first to use the Elastique algorithm, saving almost 2/3 the space of Real Tracks and Drums, right?

Guesses:

Did your earlier UltraPak drive include bonus paks that the new one does not?

Was your drive left over from an earlier version? If it had not been defragged after updating files to 2011 style, maybe that would account for what you see?

Does rharv live nearby?

rharv is too close to me. I think it's about 100 miles. However his influence seems to be larger than that. I worry about fallout.

Ian, where did you put those pictures again?

There was no further compression added.
You likely have some older "+/- files", maybe from an old set of RealTracks, or a patch update or something. These are names like jz001-2.wma or jz001+1.wma (as opposed to just jz001.wma).

If you point the BB 2012 program to that RealTracks folder, and click-Prefs-RealTracks- Erase Un-Neeeded files, it will erase those un-needed +/- files.

Another possibility would be that you uncompressed some of them to WAV files. If so, there would be WAV files of the same name (e.g. jz001.wav), and those would be un-needed as well (they are needed for the audiophile version though).

Have Fun!

I mis-identified the UltraPlus HD - it was actually the 2010 version and had had RT updates - the RT Folder size is 88.4 GB and I had NOT upgraded to all RTs.

On the other hand, the RT folder on the 2012 Everything Pak is 47.5 GB including Direct Input, even though it has more instrument folders, it is smaller than the Real Tracks folder on the 2010 HD.

Interesting to note that when comparing specific instruments i.e. Banjo, Bluegrass Doc Even 100 is 234,045KB in the 2012 EverythingPAK RT Folder, and 702,193 in the earlier 2010 UltraPlusPak RT Folder.

The 2012 individual RT files seem to be smaller than the earlier RT versions.
Why would that be? I've also noticed a decompress.exe file on the 2012 Everything Pak in the RealTracks folder

Ian, versions of BB that were made before the advent of the Elastique stretch engine use several Realtrack files for each melodic instrument Realtrack.

If you look in the folder you will see that there are files with the same name but slight changes at the end of the filename, such as +1, -1, etc.

Those are identical files except for the key they are played in, typically there will be transposed files there covering the diminished chord. The older stretch engine would pick the file closest to the key you designated and then would only have to stretch the pitch by an amount that would not create digital artifacts.

With the Elastique engine, stretching to any key from one soundfile is now possible, so there is no longer any need to have all those duplicates.

This decreases the disk space needed appreciably and more different sounding Realtracks can now be stored in much less space.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
