If I have imported a song to RB it would be nice to be able to find out how much the song is off pitch (especially when trying to find the chords in an old rock song). The chord wizard would be a nice place to find out how much the pitch is off standard tuning! Is this function hidden anywhere in RB?

What I liked about ABTune was the VUMeter like display that showed how the track was varying off pitch. Left of center was flat, right was sharp .. and making adjustemnts was reflected in this meter.
But it is discontinued, and I had to really complain to the company I bought it from before being offered a questionable resolution.
That said, it works well for the purpose you describe, but other than that I don't know of any feature in native RB that would do what you describe. maybe another third party plugin (?)

seems like you'd only need to know a numeric value for the deviation if you planned to fix it with an audio editing command that changes pitch incrementally.

But there are free pitch correcting plugins that just take whatever it is, and corrects it to whatever key you specify.

let's see... looking at my plugin directory... umm... GSNAP is such a plugin (and its free)

You can get it here:
http://www.gvst.co.uk/gsnap.htm

but if you need to know how many cents off a tone is, the guitar tuner in RB will tell you that. If your vocal track is separate from the rest of the song maybe you can run it slowly through the guitar tuner

To my memory, GSnap is a good free substitute. As I recall, it does give a reference reading. Good call Pat!

Thanks :-)

I have loaded Kinks song "All day and all of the night" but I don't seem to get any effect when I'm manipulating the knobs in Gsnap. I guess it should be possible to highlight a loop where only a single chord is played, repeat it endlessly and manipulate the correction knobs untill I have found how much the song is off pitch. I have added Gsnap to my FX list?? Maybe Gsnap isn't correctly installed? Maybe you can advise another way to find how much a track should be corrected in cents??

you can't pitch correct an entire MP3

you can only pitch correct a solo track, preferably one that contains only one note at a time (not chords)

You want me to tune a classic?
I don't understand ..
Download *which* All Day and all Night?? There are more than 1 there.

As for tuning; every word will be different in cents .. that's why these plugins work as they do. What you are attempting by moving everything a certain number of cents is called pitch shift (constant shift over whole thing)

Tuning adjusts each note a varying amount, even varying on each inflection depending on setting ..
I seem to recall thinking GSnap didn't work at one point also, but there was some setting I had to check, maybe even adjust the threshold or error correction threshold.
Or select a preset .. something made it kick on.
Since getting other tuners I haven't reloaded GSnap on recent systems, so I can't test.

You're right I want the whole thing pitch shifted so I can figure out the chords and the solo. The chords are pretty easy (opening riff, G5 F5?) but to get the sixties solo sound (which needs to be somewhat off tune and "dirty" to sound as solos did back then)is somewhat more tricky!

Here's a link to one example, I'm pretty sure that this version is only a few cents off tune, but I can't seem to find out exactly how much (could it be that the guitars are not tuned properly, intonation is wrong etc.etc.)

Play along with the opening bars of the track, using the bottom E string on your guitar to play the root note of the chords. Adjust the tuning of the string until it sounds right with the music, then use a tuner to check how far the string is off pitch. Now pitch shift the whole track by that amount. How easy is that?

EDIT - OK, I've just dug out my Kinks Story Vol 1 CD and tried it. Allowing for the fact that the early Kinks tracks always sounded as though they hadn't bothered to tune at all, the track plays pretty much at standard pitch. Perhaps you're using a live recording, or a track uploaded from cassette where the speed would alter the pitch. Try to get hold of a decent recording of the original track and it may solve your problem.

All said, the above method does work and is one I've used for years. Hope it helps.

ROG.

Gsnap is for lead lines only.

ROG's solution is the most easily accessible and reliable solution to this issue. Done that type of thing many times over the past few years.

I would be considering buying a high quality .mp3 of the file if you must have it to play along with it, then employ elastique (isn't that bundled with PG products now) to alter the whole thing slightly if necessary.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
