A long time ago now, Mac advised me not to use the latest M-Audio Delta 66 soundcard drivers as they were not as reliable as the older versions. I notice that there is now a new Windows XP SP3 version (11/14/2009) and wondered if anyone had tried it yet. The control panel has a completely new modern look.

Delta drivers have been "reliable" forever, including this newest (5074) one in my own use for months now. Fool-proof drivers are the greatest advantage of that line of cards. As I remember it, Mac's actual point was not reliability, but that he liked the choice of settings available in an earlier GUI, probably 5057.

Since 5057, one consumer-level EQ thing (Bass Boost) has been removed, and the 384-sample setting is restored to the list of available ASIO buffer sizes.

Just one more thing. M-Audio say that whilst installing the new driver, you will get the option to uninstall the old driver, during the process (which has to be done first). This did not happen and I was left with two Windows bottom toolbar icons for the Control Panel (the new one and the old one). The old version did not work of course. Any ideas? Delete it first in the Device Manager perhaps?

I'd uninstall both, then re-install the new one if it was me, just to make sure any old files were removed and the needed new ones were there. In other words, so the new install doesn't 'keep' any older files that may not be compatible.

What I did not like about the later driver:

Selection of Pro and Consumer level made no difference.

I run my system at Pro level, +4dBu.

No matter which I selected in the Delta Control Panel,
the thing was stuck on Consumer -10dBv level.

Contacted Delta Support directly and received an email that they had affirmed this to be the case and they were the ones who told me that if I needed the Pro level then I should revert to the older driver, which I did and still use.

I don't need eye candy, I need proper operation.

Don't know if they've fixed that problem in a new release or not, my mantra has always been, "If it works, don't fix it" -- and it works just fine here.

5057

But be advised that they may have possibly fixed that one issue by now, I don't know.

Thank you Mac,
I think that I will e-mail M-Audio and get an update re the "Pro/Consumer Level" issue. I will let you know if I get a result.

I reinstalled the 5057 drivers since we've been talking about them, and since I have meant to do it for some time anyway. As I remembered, they are better than the new 5074, because the old GUI is more complete.

Both work fine and don't break anything, but they have left useful stuff out of the new ones.

Shame if they have to drop features to remain compatible and reliable..

Not to worry...maybe. I think they likely have only published what they had working well so far. They were another company behind schedule with Win7 drivers, and under pressure to release improvements. Delta drivers have always proceeded by fits and starts. Then they reach plateaus, versions that become classics. The present situation is likely not the last word.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
