I'm confused about these new SSD's. Do you get them to more quickly run your OS or to run apps or access data? How do you figure out what size to get? Do you size it for your OS or data? Do you size it to replace your mechanical hard drive or to supplement it? Is access speed the only reason to get one? If it only reduces my startup time by 50% and nothing else, I can live without it. What are your thoughts?

I have among the earliest Intel SSD drives and even so, I absolutely love it. I put it in the system as drive C and installed Windows 7 and most apps. Mine is 120 GB. Everything loads faster, not just booting up. I will never go back to a traditional hard drive for the OS.
In general, you want to use a SSD drive for reading more than writing. It's great for Windows and applications, less so for data particularly when it gets changed a lot. Erasing and re-writing is the thing that has a finite life on these drives. For that reason, never Defrag one.
One other benefit is, I've had no black/blue screens of death. Since it is so much faster, and you don't have to worry about maintaining power to it, it seems to be much more stable than the traditional hard drive even if the system hangs, loses power, etc.

For me the entire rationale was speed. Due to cost I bought a 60 Gb unit for use as my C: drive. This is actually pathetically small, but it keeps me from loading crapplications. I loaded the OS and program files but had to turn off Hibernation as hib.fil took up a third of the drive. All data (except for Propellerhead Reason's factory sound banks) is loaded on drive D:, a 7,200-RPM server-grade hard drive. You can see other details of my system below.
When I first got my PC from the shop that built it for me it would boot to a work-ready state in 20 seconds. Many changes have been made and it's a little slower now, but still well under a minute. Again, the rationale was speed. This is absolutely the fastest machine I've ever had my hands on. Most apps start instantly. The only real lag I've seen is with web apps and Reason, which for some reason takes longer to start than the PC does. I assume that's due to the software itself.
In short, my recommendation would be to get the largest SSD you can afford, but be ready to make frequent, regular backups. There's an extended discussion of the reasons for that in another discussion. Bottom line is, all SSDs will eventually fail, and it's best to assume that you can't get any of your data back.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
