Thanks for the heads up - not sure if it affects my notebook which I recently updated, but good to know for clients who may face this problem.

Thanks Bob. If I'm reading these articles correctly, this is about the software controlling one model of one manufacturer's SSD. Although the 840 by Samsung is highly popular, this isn't an indictment of the technology, just this one fixable implementation.
Two of my machines still run amazingly on early Intel SSDs that are over two years old.
Still, this was a very interesting peek into this technology.

Right on Matt. I probably should have titled the topic differently, as the title I used does appear particularly indemnifying against all SSDs.
I wouldn't have thought that there could be a software algorithm that would eventually choke performance like described in this case - one assumes the technology itself is immune to it.

I've been planning to build my next desktop and that exact drive was going to be part of it. Looks like I'll be waiting a bit, but I'm confident they will have a fix before it affects your daughter's machine.
Fascinating thread, really - to think that state of the art hardware can be crippled by a software algorithm.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
