Most probably already know this. I've been reading about a number of people who have been suckered.

You get an e-mail that looks like it's from Microsoft inviting you to click the link to upgrade to Windows 10.

But in reality, it's not from Microsoft, --- Microsoft will not send you an e-mail for an upgrade, it doesn't need to.

So if you click the link, you will download a trojan that encrypts your files, your pictures, your documents, your movies, your music, your everything.

Then the pop up screen tells you that you have 96 hours (the clock counts down) to pay a ransom to get your files back.

They use state-of-the-art encryption methods so there is no way any computer is going to generate the key in 96 hours.

If you don't pay in 96 hours, you won't hear from them again and your files will be lost.

And they want to be paid in bitcoins, which are harder to trace than money that goes through the banking system.

Be warned. MS will not invite you to upgrade via an e-mail.

Good advice Bob. Didn't know that. Microsoft has already promised to release a major Windows 10 update in October - I think I'll wait for that. I'm also not crazy about mandatory automatic updates.

If you requested it, Microsoft will notify you that your computer is ready for upgrade via email; however, I don't believe it will contain a download link, as the download should have already happened in the background on your ocmputer. But if you requested notification, you may very well get an email from Microsoft regarding upgrading Windows 10. I suggest reading the email very carefully.

I think the only way to safely get the download is the little windows icon that appears in the tray your taskbar.

It's amazing to me how creative and quick the thieves can be. I would have never thought of this, but after it surfaced, I can see the 'logic' of it.

Be safe.

PS, I'm going to wait a few months to upgrade anyway. There are bound to be cutting edge / bleeding edge problems and patches to fix them. I don't want to be the lab rat.

Hey, I just got an email from Microsoft inviting me to join their Spam Fighters! They say I won't get more than one or two messages a day if I sign up! What do you think? Should I click the link?

Signed,

And a few months ago I overheard a woman at a yacht club were we were gigging tell her friend that Microsoft just called her on the phone and told her there was a virus on her computer and they are cleaning her computer (and I suspect her bank account).

I got the call a few weeks later, and I just told him that I'm too savvy to fall for that one. It came from an unlisted phone number (Unknown).

But I did read that the "Nigerian Banker" scam is waning. Most of the suckers that would fall for that one, have already done so.

BTW, the first Nigerian banker scam I got was before I was on the Internet, it came through the US Mail, with a US stamp and a US postmark. I knew it was a scam, but didn't know how the scam would work, and didn't want to respond to find out.

I guess they got my name out of one of the pre-Internet ads I placed in Electronics Musician, Keyboard, or Guitar Player magazine advertising my style disks for BiaB.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
